Sappi says it also aligns with its commitment to cre- ate shared value, especially in the communities where it operates. Based north of central Johannesburg, South Africa, Sappi was founded in 1936 and today employees nearly 12,500 employees in more than 20 countries and manu- facturing operations on three continents. Sappi Awarded Platinum Rating From EcoVadis For Sustainability Sappi was awarded Platinum, the highest rating in Eco- Vadis’ sustainability assessment across all three of its manufacturing regions – Europe, North America, and South Africa. Sappi continues to be among the top 1 percent of the companies worldwide rated by EcoVadis in the manufac- ture of pulp, paper and paperboard category. In 2018-2019, Sappi received the EcoVadis gold med- al, which was the highest level until the Platinum category was introduced in 2020. “At Sappi, we recognize that sustainability is about investing in people-centric, positive change,” says Tracy Wessels, Group Head of Investor Relations and Sustain- ability, Sappi. “We are immensely grateful for the ongoing collabo- ration with EcoVadis, and we look forward to continuing this strategic approach, regionally and globally, thereby innovating our sustainability efforts in areas where we can have the greatest impact.” Understanding that EcoVadis can help Sappi’s suppli- ers on their own sustainability journey, Sappi said it part- nered with EcoVadis in 2021 to benchmark and assess the sustainability practices of its suppliers.
