of them a little push to encourage them to leave. We had nev- er expected help from the local Arabs during the war and would not have trusted them anyway. In Haifa, the Arab majority fled when Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq attacked. It was frightening to see them abandoning the city and running to Lebanon. Israeli trucks with loudspeakers went around the streets of Haifa, urg- ing the Arabs not to leave, saying, “Why are you leaving?” Some Arabs were persuaded to stay. Today a substantial Arab popula- tion still lives in Haifa, but nothing compared to the size it used to be. Most of Haifa is now settled by Jews, and it is a flourishing modern city.
