Another Country, a New Family

En route to the U.S., Aharon Golub, ( left ), with fellow travelers at the Acropolis, Athens (1954)

on October 24, 1954 for a visit to the United States. When I went aboard I had no intention of remaining permanently in the United States. The Jerusalem was a slow old ship and it took a long time to sail from Haifa to New York. But I had a good time during the voyage. Israelis were only allowed to take ten dollars in foreign currency out of the country because Israel was in a tight financial crunch and dollars were very scarce, but we were given some special boat currency that could be used only aboard the ship. The ship stopped in Athens for a day. Even though I only had ten dollars, I debated with myself the whole night before we docked whether or not to splurge two of my precious dollars on a tour of Athens. “I’m going to America/’ I thought. “I don’t know what’s going to be there, and I need at least a stamp to write a letter to my girlfriend. ”
