WHY I LOVE THE SUNSHINE SHOWDOWN I’m thankful for plenty this Thanksgiving; however, I'm most grateful for football. Football is ingrained into many traditions in Florida when it comes to our two oldest colleges. In fact, if it hadn't been for the infamous Florida vs. Florida State rivalry, I don't know where my life would be today. Every post-Thanksgiving Saturday, the two colleges put on the Sunshine Showdown. There's a lot at stake as both teams are usually playing for their respective championships. The temperature is always in the 70s this time of year, so it’s a perfect day for the matchup. I go with a few college friends every year along with my wife, her brother, sister, and brother-
menu for the day was Thanksgiving leftovers: turkey sandwiches, mashed potatoes, you name it! We "Gatored out" all day in our favorite University of Florida apparel. The atmosphere that night was electric as the University of Florida fans and alumni filled the stadium and chanted "Blue! Orange!" throughout the entire game. Admittedly, I remember very little about the actual football game because, during these festivities, I had finally gotten this amazing girl I had liked for four years to agree to a date with me the next day. She was the youngest sister of one of my best friends in the University of Florida’s physical therapy program. My persistence paid off, but I was nervous.
Well, the girl who gave me a shot all those years ago has turned out to be the love of my life. So, while we make the typical Thanksgiving dinner and celebrate with some fantastic friends and family, I can't wait for this year's game. Maybe I'm just reminiscing or missing her right now, but I'm so grateful for that 2011 Sunshine Showdown that gave me so many memories with my wife. So, this Thanksgiving, look back at what you're most thankful for; you may surprise yourself. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
