German engineering company Heidelberger Druck- maschinen and global producer of speciality chemicals Solenis have jointly developed a process for barrier coat- ings on flexible paper packaging. The packaging is suitable for food, beverages, cosmet- ics, and certain nonfood products. Heidelberger has incorporated Solenis’ barrier coat- ings technology into its flexographic web printing process Boardmaster.

According to the company, the new inline process en- sures that barrier coatings are applied precisely and only where needed during production. The partnership aims to make this technology readily accessible to packaging producers by utilizing the capa- bilities of the Boardmaster assemblies for applying barrier coatings. Flexible paper packaging is forecasted to see an annu- al growth of 4.5 percent until the end of this decade. According to a survey by the Baden-Württemberg Co- operative State University (DHBW) Heilbronn and Heidel- berger, the demand for environmentally friendly packag- ing alternatives is on the rise. DIGI Labels Approved For Direct Food Contact Label Manufacturing DIGI Labels, a label converter in Mullingar, Ireland, has achieved the British Retail Consortium Global Standards (BRCGS) certification for Packaging Materials, for both di- rect and indirect food contact. BRCGS is recognized globally as one of the most rigor- ous standards for manufacturers serving the food industry. The facility produces labels for customers across the food and beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, logistics and cosmetic industries. It is one of three locations in the DIGI Group across the island of Ireland. The company has grown its staff by 56 percent in four years.
