EMBRACING OPPORTUNITY: Marina Savelli’s ’94 Journey from UIndy to Leadership Marina Savelli ’94 (MBA) never thought she would leave her native Brazil. But for the last 30 years, Indiana has been her home, as she has steadily risen through the ranks at Cummins Inc. But if it wasn’t for UIndy, it may not have been possible. It all started with a degree in economics in São Paulo, Brazil’s largest city and financial center. For two years, she worked in the stock market there before her continuous drive for self-improvement brought her to the United States in 1992. She originally intended to stay just six months to learn American business culture and sharpen her English skills. But everything changed when a friend enrolled at the University of Indianapolis and asked her a question that would shift her
career trajectory for good: “Why don’t you apply, too? We can stay here, learn, and grow together.” That simple question changed everything. Savelli’s brief summer trip turned into a two-year journey at the UIndy School of Business, where she pursued her Master of Business Administration (MBA). “As would happen many times in my career, I went with the flow,” Savelli said. “I saw the opportunity ahead of me and embraced it.” One of the most transformative lessons Savelli took away from UIndy’s MBA program was the power of collaboration.
