“The primary reason I come to work every day is to actually make a difference in people’s lives. How can I help them succeed in their roles? That’s what excites me.” — Marina Savelli ’94
She recalls long hours spent with classmates at Krannert Memorial Library, working through complex case studies together. Many of her peers were also international students, bringing diverse perspectives that enriched their problem-solving process. “As I think about this team, we were learning from each other. We were having fun, but we were also learning how to interact with people from different perspectives and backgrounds. That’s something I carry into my role today.” Savelli joined Cummins Inc. the summer after graduating from UIndy. Today, she leads their Off-Highway Engine Business, overseeing all operations related to engines that don’t have road applications, such as construction, agricultural, and marine equipment, and connecting with customers and staff from around the world. As a leader, Savelli focuses on the impact of her work on others and strives to strengthen that impact every day. “The primary reason I come to work every day is to actually make a difference in people’s lives,” said Savelli. “How can I help them succeed in their roles? That’s what excites me.” Being a woman in leadership is not without its challenges. Savelli is often the only woman—and sometimes the only Latina—in the room. “It’s always a challenge to walk into a room where people don’t look like you,” said Savelli. “But there are also benefits to being different;
you bring a unique perspective.” Savelli didn’t reach her current position by shying away from challenges. Over the years, her self-awareness and confidence have fueled her success, and she shares this lesson with as many mentees as possible. “Another challenge is showing that you belong in the room. Not because you’re a woman but because you are smart; you had a long career; and you bring a lot of knowledge,” continued Savelli. “Once you overcome that, you get a lot of respect from people. There’s a reason why you’re there. You’re there because you’re good at what you do.” Savelli’s journey is a testament to the power of education in shaping one’s future. She credits her time at UIndy for providing the foundation and confidence she needed to embrace her uniqueness in the corporate world. “I want to thank UIndy for the difference it made in my career,” said Savelli. “The reason I’m here today is because I had the opportunity to get my MBA.” As she continues to break barriers and inspire others, Savelli embodies UIndy’s motto of “Education for Service.” Her story serves as inspiration for not only aspiring leaders but anyone looking to make a meaningful difference in their communities and industries. “Think big. Don’t limit yourself,” encouraged Savelli. “If you keep your head in it and you actually want to do it, you can achieve a lot.”
