WHAT DOES “ELITE” REALLY MEAN AT THE TEXAS BASEBALL RANCH ® ? By Coach Ron Wolforth
To us, “elite” is not a skill set. It’s a mindset . It’s not about where a young man is today. It’s about how he shows up. His desire to grow. His willingness to think differently, to train with intention, to lean into discomfort, and to chase excellence, not just results. When we say “elite,” we’re talking about a young man who’s not satisfied with the status quo. He’s not looking for shortcuts or cookie-cutter answers. He’s hungry for the truth about his development. He’s curious. He’s coachable. He’s willing to be vulnerable and ask hard questions. He may not have it all figured out, and he might still be rough around the edges. That’s perfectly okay. That’s exactly who this event is built for.
Over the years, countless parents have asked us, “My son’s a solid pitcher, but he’s not one of those ‘elite’ kids yet. Is the Elite Pitchers Boot Camp still a good fit? ” It’s a great question, and it deserves a thoughtful answer. At the Texas Baseball Ranch, we always choose our words carefully. So, when we named it the Elite Pitchers Boot Camp , we weren’t referring to a select group of genetically gifted young men already throwing 90+ mph or dominating their age group. That’s how most people define “elite,” based purely on current skill level or performance stats. That’s not how we see it.
So, if you’re a parent wondering whether your son belongs at the EPBC, here’s what we encourage you to consider: Does your son want to separate himself from the mediocre middle? Is he ready to think differently, work differently, and separate himself from the herd…not just with talent, but by intent and commitment? If the answer is yes, then he’s our kind of “elite”. We’ve built this camp, and the entire Ranch experience, for athletes like him. Not the finished product. But the hungry ones. The curious ones. The ones with a fire in their belly and a vision for something more. That’s what we mean when we say “elite.” And that’s who we’re honored to work with.
UPCOMING RANCH EVENTS
YOUNGBLOOD SCORES HITS FOR 2 DIFFERENT TEAMS — ON THE SAME DAY! This Month in Baseball History Joel Youngblood is mostly absent from the record books of Major League Baseball, except for one remarkable feat on Aug. 4, 1982. On that day, Youngblood got hits for two different teams, in two different cities — on the same day! After starting for the New York Mets in an afternoon road game against the Chicago Cubs, Youngblood drove in two runs. On deck for his next at-bat, he was called into the dugout and told he had been traded to the Montreal Expos, who wanted him to play that night in a road game against the Phillies! Youngblood hopped a plane and arrived in Philadelphia in the sixth inning — just in time to step in as a pinch hitter and hit a single. There’s more: Youngblood made both hits off two future Hall of Fame pitchers — Ferguson Jenkins in Chicago and Steve Carlton in Philadelphia! Not a bad day at work, by any measure!
