Wine Tour in Tenerife | DIGITAL
Tenerife has long been famous for the quality of its wines: Shakespeare mentioned them in Twelfth Night , and the first American president, George Washington, preferred Tenerife wines to beer. The island’s volcanic soil produces especially flavourful vintages, and you can try some classic examples on this driving tour of Tenerife’s north coast, which visits scenic vineyards, lush forests and beautiful old towns.

From The Ritz-Carlton, Abama, head north on the TF-1 and TF-82 (26km), then follow the scenic TF-373 through Canarian pine forests, with views of mountains and the blackened lava flows of the Chinyero nature reserve. The road zig-zags into pretty Icod de los Vinos (17km), where you can taste wine made with local grapes in the gorgeous gardens at the Museo de Malvasia. Suitably refreshed, pick up the TF-5 and follow the island’s north coast before turning off towards the beautiful Orotava Valley (25km). Here you’ll see vineyards perched in the foothills of Mount Teide: look out for the traditional cordon trenzado , vines that have been braided together so they run horizontally for up to 20 metres. Vintages from several local wineries – Tajinaste Viñedos y Bodega, Bodegas Suertes de Marques and Bodegas Arautava – can be ordered at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama’s restaurants. Follow the coast on the TF-5 to the Casa del Vino,
or “House of Wine” (15km), where you can visit a vineyard, discover more about the history and unique flavour of Tenerife’s wines – and, most important, enjoy a tasting of several island vintages, served with local cheeses, honey and roast pork. Return to the Orotava Valley to walk off lunch amid spectacular scenery, admire the Baroque architecture in the historic centre of La Orotava, and enjoy unique insight into the island’s viniculture. You can taste four award-winning reds and whites in the company of an expert at Tajinaste Viñedos y Bodega, which produces wines from vines planted in 1939. Pick up a bottle or two of your favourite, then head back to The Ritz-Carlton, Abama (64km) for a sundowner to toast your Tenerife wine adventure. Driving distance: 162km. Tajinaste Viñedos y Bodega offers tastings at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 11 a.m. on Saturdays.
