A Walk Worth Taking HONORING MY GRANDMOTHER AND FIGHTING FOR A FUTURE WITHOUT ALZHEIMER’S

If you have been reading our newsletter for a while, you’re probably used to hearing from Brian. But this time, I am stepping in to share a little about myself and something that means a great deal to all of us here at Eagle & Fein. My name is Scott, and I am an attorney at the firm. While most of my time is spent helping families navigate the complexities of estate planning, this season allows us to focus on something even bigger: giving back. With Sept. 5 marking the International Day of Charity and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s coming up in October, I wanted to take a moment to talk about what these events mean to me personally and to our team.

lived with Alzheimer’s, and watching her journey was one of the most difficult experiences of my life. Seeing someone you love slowly lose their memories, independence, and connection to the world around them is heartbreaking. You feel helpless, and it leaves a mark on you. But it also gave me a deep sense of purpose. That is why the Walk to End Alzheimer’s has become more than just an event on our calendar. Every October, our firm participates as a team, walking together not only to raise funds but to stand in solidarity with those still fighting and those who have already lost loved ones to this disease. This year, we will be walking again at the Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Oct. 4, and I invite you to join us. Whether you walk beside us or contribute from afar, every step and every dollar brings us closer to a cure. You can find our team page at ACT.ALZ.org/ goto/EagleandFein , or by scanning the QR code in this newsletter to sign up or donate. Your support means more than you know. Of course, charity does not stop after October. Around the holidays, we look forward to continuing our efforts through the Woodland Christmas Club. This tradition is close to our hearts. Every Thanksgiving, we deliver food to local families who need the support. And at Christmas, we shop for gifts and once again bring meals to those in need. It is one of those things

that reminds us why we do what we do: to help others not only plan for their futures but live better today. Community outreach is more than a checkbox for us. It’s a core part of who we are as a firm. We don’t just serve our clients; we serve our neighbors. Giving back, especially to causes that touch our own lives, makes the work we do even more meaningful. I hope you will join us in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s or find your way to give back this fall. Together, we really can make a difference. – Scott Linneweber

Whether you are a seasoned trekker or just looking to enjoy leaf-peeping and fresh air, fall is the ultimate season to hit the trails. And the U.S. is brimming with stunning places to do just that.

YOUR FINANCIAL SAFETY NET STARTS WITH ONE SIMPLE STEP Who Will Pay Your Bills if You Cannot?

CHOOSE WHO ACTS FOR YOU. A durable power of attorney lets you decide who will represent you if you are unable to manage your affairs. This trusted agent can handle a wide range of responsibilities: paying bills, managing investments, signing contracts, and handling other financial issues on your behalf. You can designate someone who truly understands your financial situation and wishes. SKIP THE COURTROOM. Without a POA, your family’s hands are tied. They could spend months trying to gain legal access to manage your affairs, all while bills pile up and urgent matters go unresolved. A durable POA eliminates that uncertainty. It is recognized by financial institutions, insurance companies, and other organizations, giving your agent immediate power to act when needed. SECURE YOUR FUTURE TODAY. A durable power of attorney is not just for retirees or those with health concerns — every adult should have one. You cannot predict the future, but you can prepare for it.

Life does not always give us a warning. An accident, sudden illness, or mental decline can leave you unable to handle your finances or make critical decisions. In those moments, a durable power of attorney (POA) can be the difference between your independence and legal chaos. It is not just a document; it is a safeguard for your freedom and peace of mind. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A POA? Unlike wills or health care directives, which follow established legal paths whether or not you plan ahead, your financial affairs during incapacity do not have a safety net. If you have not appointed someone to act on your behalf, your loved ones cannot simply step in to help, not even a spouse or child. Banks and financial institutions are bound by strict policies. They will not allow anyone access to your accounts without proper legal documentation. Imagine needing to pay your incapacitated parent’s mortgage or medical bills and being told you need a court order to do so. That is the reality for families without a POA in place.

Our team makes the process swift and stress-free. Let us

help you put this essential protection in place so you can move forward with confidence, knowing your affairs are in trusted hands, no matter what tomorrow brings. Call us today to schedule your appointment. It is one simple step that makes a world of difference.

TEENS IN THE DIGITAL AGE

In today’s tap-to-pay world, the days of piggy banks and cash allowances for chores are gone. Teens are growing up with financial apps, Venmo, debit cards, and virtual transfers they cannot physically

see. In this cashless culture, parents have to rethink how they teach young adults basic financial literacy. Empowering your children to budget wisely is all about helping them understand the value behind a swipe, tap, or click. TEEN SPENDING Today’s teens spend more money online, frequenting food delivery apps and websites like Amazon or Sephora. Though their digital shopping habits have increased, fewer young people seek part-time or summer jobs. Studies have found that teens who work to earn a paycheck are more likely to budget, save, and think before purchasing. With less hands-on experience with money management and the convenience of buying items with the simple click of a button, it’s become easier than ever to spend money impulsively and recklessly. TEACHING TIPS In a sea of apps and short-form videos, parents can be a trusted source of information about financial literacy; it just takes creativity to make the lessons stick. Start by having regular discussions about finances as a family. Real-life examples can help them practice saving and budgeting, like plotting out the expenses for school supplies or identifying big purchases they want to make, like a car. Encourage teens in a fun way, like doing a savings challenge where they have to put away $1 every week. This can help them get into the habit of saving and waiting to buy the things they want until they have the budget to support it. Gamify money management lessons as much as you can to keep them engaged. You can even find apps that help young people budget and learn important financial concepts. One app called BusyKid helps them manage their allowance and introduces them to safe investment opportunities. In a world where money moves with a tap, it is more important than ever for teens to focus on financial literacy. With the right tools and conversations, you can help them set up smart money habits that last a lifetime.

Wraps: • 4 large collard green leaves • 1/2 cup hummus, divided • 3/4 lb sliced turkey • 1/2 carrots, grated • 1/4 bell pepper, sliced thinly • 1 zucchini, sliced thinly

• 1 tsp honey • Pinch of salt

• 1/2 avocado, sliced • 1/4 cup cabbage, thinly sliced

DIRECTIONS

1. Mix all sauce ingredients until smooth. 2. Prepare collard leaves by cutting the stems off and trimming the thick vein that runs down the center of the leaf so that it lies flat. 3. Blanch collard leaves by dipping them into hot water, then immediately into cold water. 4. Dry leaves and lay flat, spreading 1–2 tbsp of hummus onto the center of each. 5. Add several turkey slices and sliced veggies. 6. Fold the right and left leaf sides in toward each other. Roll the collard leaf tight and tuck in the edges. Secure with 2 toothpicks, slice down the center, and serve with sauce for dipping.

Planning for a future where you or a loved one might not be able to make crucial decisions is never easy, but it is one of the most meaningful steps you can take to protect autonomy, dignity, and financial security. When preparing for incapacity, understanding the differences between a guardianship and a power of attorney (POA) is essential. While both tools ensure someone can help, the way they work and the control you maintain are very different. WHAT IS GUARDIANSHIP? Guardianship is a legal arrangement created and overseen by the court. It is typically used when a person can no longer make sound decisions for themselves due to mental or physical incapacity, and no previous legal planning was done. The court appoints a guardian to decide on the individual’s personal, financial, or medical matters. There are two types: voluntary guardianship , where the individual consents, and involuntary guardianship , where the court appoints a guardian due to the individual’s inability to consent. While guardianship can offer broad authority, it comes with emotional strain, legal fees, and the loss of personal control. Guardianship may be necessary in some

situations, but most people can avoid it entirely by setting up a power of attorney in advance.

HOW A POWER OF ATTORNEY WORKS A power of attorney is a proactive legal tool that allows you to appoint someone you trust to act on your behalf in specific or general matters. Unlike guardianship, a POA is created outside the courtroom, offering more privacy, less red tape, and significantly more control. A durable POA can cover everything from managing bank accounts and paying bills to making investment decisions or authorizing medical treatments. Most importantly, you decide who acts for you and how much authority they have, down to the last detail. ACTING EARLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE Once someone loses the ability to make legal decisions, it is too late to create a power of attorney. Families are left with no choice but to pursue guardianship, which can be a slow, public, and emotionally taxing process. Contact our firm today to create a personalized power of attorney that puts your future in the hands of someone you trust. Do not wait until it is out of your hands. Let us plan ahead together.
