WHY THIS MOMENT MATTERS For the first time in history, we are on the brink of preventing drunk driving before it happens—not just responding after tragedy. The decisions made in the next few years will determine how quickly this life-saving technology reaches every new vehicle on the road.
We’re at the point where a rule needs to be made by NHTSA to determine which technology solution will ultimately be adopted. MADD is leading the national movement to ensure this life-saving technology is implemented —working with policymakers, automakers, and safety leaders to move from legislation to real-world impact. We are neutral on which system should be standardized.
In 2025, our primary focus continued to be the full implementation of the HALT Drunk Driving Law. Passed with bipartisan support in 2021, this landmark federal law requires all new vehicles to be equipped with anti-drunk driving technology that will passively detect and prevent impaired driving before a crash can occur. This innovation will save more than 10,000 lives each year and prevent hundreds of thousands of injuries.
