FAMILY Alejandra Ochoa de Thompson, founder and creative visionary of Thompson, emigrated to the United States from Mexico at the age of 22. Together with her childhood sweetheart Clifford, they built a family and career in the United States. While Alejandra began her career in design by creating award-winning spaces for major department stores and hotels worldwide, her beloved Santa Clara del Cobre, Mexico was never far from her heart.
Alejandra always knew her career in commercial design was not meant to be her life’s work. Every visit to Mexico reignited her love of the region’s copper arts and moved her closer to the goal of bringing the authentic beauty and craftsmanship of Santa Clara del Cobre to American homes. Alejandra’s dream became a reality a little more than two decades ago when she took the bold step of launching Thompson—a company whose portfolio now features a diverse and growing portfolio of designs for the kitchen, bath, and home.

LEGACY
On sunny days there is a distinctive orange glow around the town square of Santa Clara del Cobre, Mexico. It is the reflection from the copper wares hanging outside the shops, the copper kettles suspended from the top of the kiosk that marks the town center, and from the pillars, roofs and architectural adornments that pay homage to the town’s livelihood. “Cobre” means “copper,” a name that is apropos given the history of Santa Clara del Cobre. The indigenous P’urhépecha, who inhabited the area beginning in the 14th century, were considered the world’s most advanced metallurgists of pre-Hispanic times. Their sophisticated command of crafting tools and weapons from copper enabled them to defeat invading Aztecs. Although the P’urhépecha enjoyed access to copper mines in the nearby mountains, it was the abundant forests that provided fuel for smelting ore...establishing a livelihood that would endure for centuries. With a company-owned factory in this renowned copper-crafting town, Thompson is part of the Santa Clara del Cobra community. Their hand-crafted products for the home bring the authentic metalsmithing legacy of Santa Clara del Cobre to designers and homeowners throughout North America.

ARTISTRY
Masterful, meticulous, deliberate—these three words describe Thompson metalsmiths. Each maker is a master craftsman in Santa Clara del Cobre, Mexico, a historic coppersmithing region. Each vessel, vanity, range hood, tub, or custom project is hand-hammered, creating a unique product that celebrates the area’s legacy, expertise, and artistry. Our metalsmiths dedicate hours, days, and sometimes weeks to create one-of-a-kind vessels and finishes. Certain finishes, like antique satin gold are only obtainable by specific craftsmen. The craftsmanship behind each Thompson product ultimately rests in the hands of its maker. Each a virtuoso and student of their Santa Clara del Cobra ancestors, they have honed their skills since the 16th century when the native P’urhépecha were considered the world’s most advanced metallurgists of pre-Hispanic times. The human touch is evident in every hand-crafted detail, with each product representing the skillful hands of its maker. No two pieces are alike in outward appearance; however, each piece is unified through its craftsmanship—the intrinsic value unique to Thompson.
