Expertly adding just a few refill casks to soften and smooth the flavours, Gordon chose to bottle at 44% ABV to allow the whisky’s vibrant fruitiness and distinctive heathery peat to shine through.

THE STORY The year was 1924. It was the heart of the Prohibition Era and wine’s darkest hour when it was outlawed and deemed unconstitutional. It was also the year our family first planted vineyards in California and farmed grapes that were sold to friends and neighbors. Story goes some of these grapes might have been used to make wine.

Calera’s Mt. Harlan Vineyards are located in the Gabilan Mountains 25 miles east of the Monterey Bay. The site was chosen for its limestone soils and ideal climate. At an average elevation of 2,200 feet it is among the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California. On the palate, this wine is elegant and alluring, with silky tannins and pure, flowing flavors of black cherry, black currant and notions of stone fruits.

From the beginning, we focused on looking for the best grapes. It was never about shiny new equipment or a fancy cellar. Tyrrel and I used to drive around looking at vineyards every weekend, talking with the grape growers. Actually, it was Tyrrel that did most of the early negotiating—I stayed behind in the truck because as an American guy with a strong accent, I wasn’t the person best suited to convincing farmers that we were deserving of their grapes. It was important to win their trust if we were to win their best fruit. As we eventually found our footing, the MAN project became a collaboration with the grape growers, and today they are shareholders in our company. We are very lucky to be in partnership with experienced farmers who collectively grow some of the best old vine Chenin Blanc in the country. To create the Stella Rosa wines, our family chose The region of Asti, a province in Piedmont, Italy,
as the source for its aromatic grapes, which have become the hallmark for the Stella Rosa style of wines. The area of Asti has particular significance to our family, as it is the birthplace of our family matriarch, Maddalena Riboli. Our first Stella Rosa wine was Moscato D’Asti, which has become a flagship of this line. Soon after, Stella Rosa Rosso was created – the brand’s first semi-sweet, semi-sparkling red wine blend, and first wine of its kind to be brought to America from Asti. The rapid phenomenal successes of these two wines began the lineage of Stella Rosa, which now boasts over 20 distinctive flavors.

Over the top and shattering to the veins, these wines possess major concentration and daring flavor. The original is the Earthquake Zin which came from an old Lodi vineyard planted around the same time of San Francisco's great Earthquake of 1906. While mulling over a label name in the vineyard, Michael Phillips thought it only seemed fitting to relate this intense wine with the historical quake. Our tequila is named after our founder, Eduardo “Lalo” González, the nickname given to him by his grandfather, the father of premium tequila, Don Julio González.
