Get Relief for Your Sports Injury & Get Back in the Game

Thomas was an avid high school football player with dreams of making it to the college level–and maybe, someday, even the World Cup! He trained hard and played even harder, but one misstep during a match changed everything. As he lunged for the ball, he felt a sharp pain in his ankle and crumpled to the ground. The diagnosis was quick but disheartening: an ankle sprain. Fortunately, the physiotherapists at The Physiotherapy Center LTD were on the case. We have extensive experience in identifying and treating all types of sports injuries. A significant part of our process involves conducting a whole-body assessment to ensure we identify all the factors that may impact recovery. That way, we can design our programs tailored to meet your needs. This is exactly what we did for Thomas and his ankle sprain, and we want to share his story with you to help you understand just how effective physiotherapy can be for addressing sports injuries.

Assessing Thomas’s Ankle Sprain At first, Thomas didn’t know the severity of his injury. Like many, he thought he could just ‘walk it off.’ However, the key signs of an ankle sprain were all there, including pain, swelling, and trouble putting weight on his foot. As a serious athlete, Thomas was familiar with ankle sprains. They occur when the ligaments supporting the ankle stretch beyond their limits and tear. When Thomas landed awkwardly during his match, he twisted his ankle, damaging his ligament in the process. Because ankle sprains are so common, they’re often ignored. Many athletes don’t want to miss out on competing and “play through” their injuries, and Thomas was tempted to do the same. Fortunately, his coach put a stop to it, noting to Thomas that getting proper care is critical to full recovery. What really convinced Thomas, however, was the fact that ankle sprains are susceptible to recurrent sprains, especially when not properly rehabilitated.

The Road to Recovery

• Functional Training: Thomas gradually returned to activities that mimicked football movements, such as sprinting and quick pivots. • Sport-Specific Drills: As he regained strength, we introduced football-specific exercises (like dribbling drills and passing practice) to help prepare him for a full return. Through his recovery, we also provided Thomas with key strategies to improve his game and protect him from injury, including appropriate pre-practice and pre-match warmups, good sleep hygiene, and a regular conditioning program. Embrace The Recovery Blueprint and Get Back in Action! Thomas’s story reminds us of the importance of addressing sports injuries with guidance from our team at The Physiotherapy Center LTD. Whether you’re dealing with an ankle sprain or another sports injury, we’re here to help! Just as we did for Thomas, we can help you manage pain, restore strength and mobility, and practice the sport- specific movements that will help you excel no matter what you play. Call to schedule an appointment today!

At his coach’s urging, Thomas visited the team at The Physiotherapy Center LTD. We evaluated his injury and learned more about his goals, particularly his dreams of playing football at a higher level. This information helped us create a program to suit his needs. • Initial Steps: Initially, we focused on reducing Thomas’s pain, eliminating his swelling, and restoring his mobility. This involved M.I.C.E. (Move, Ice, Compression, Elevation). This simple method is crucial in the early stages of an ankle sprain. Thomas learned to keep moving his ankle, apply ice to reduce pain, and use compression with elevation to reduce the swelling. • Building Strength and Stability: Once Thomas’s swelling went down, we shifted our focus towards rebuilding strength and stability. This phase included: • Strengthening Exercises: Thomas worked on exercises to strengthen the muscles around his ankle, including toe raises and resistance band exercises. • Balance Training: To regain stability, Thomas practiced balancing exercises, a crucial step in preventing future sprains. • Regaining Functionality: The final phase of Thomas’s therapy centered on getting him back to his pre-injury level and back on the field. This involved:

Tips for Easing Swelling in Our Tropical Heat As wonderful as year-round warm weather can be for hitting the beach and lying out in the sun, it can also lead to swelling in the legs, feet, and hands. When the heat and humidity are high, your blood vessels expand, causing fluid to pool in the affected tissue (and making you more uncomfortable). How to Do It: • Schedule movement breaks to get up, stretch, and move around.

• If your job requires you to be on your feet, it’s still important to change your position and, ideally, walk around for five minutes or so. • Incorporate light exercise into your routine, such as an evening beach stroll or lap swimming in the pool. 3. Elevate and Cool : Gravity makes fluids pool in the lower body, which is why elevation helps. How to Do It: • Raise your legs above heart level for 15–20 minutes when resting. • Use cool compresses or soak your feet in cool water after a long day. • Invest in lightweight, breathable compression socks or stockings. 4. Schedule an Appointment with The Physiotherapy Center LTD: Remember, our team is always here to provide you with personalized guidance. We’re happy to provide you with the tools and strategies you need to help your body handle our island heat while keeping swelling under control!

Thankfully, the team at The Physiotherapy Center LTD is here to suggest simple, practical steps you can take to improve circulation. 1. Stay Hydrated: We know you’ve heard it before, but it bears repeating: keeping hydrated is one of the most important things you can do to avoid hot-weather discomfort, including swelling. How to Do It: • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. • Add electrolytes if you’re active or sweating more than usual. • Limit salty snacks, which can contribute to swelling. Instead, eat hydrating foods like melons, peaches, or strawberries. 2. Move Often: Staying in one position for too long (whether sitting or standing) can make swelling worse, so try to keep active.

Ingredients: • 1 medium breadfruit (firm and mature, not overripe) • Vegetable oil (for frying) • Sea salt or seasoned salt, to taste • Optional: cayenne pepper, garlic powder, or lime zest for extra flavor Recipe Of The Month: Breadfruit Chips

“Telehealth involves using telecommunications and virtual technology to deliver healthcare outside of traditional healthcare facilities. Telehealth, which requires access only to telecommunications, is the most basic element of “eHealth,” which uses a broader range of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Telehealth examples include virtual home health care, where patients such as the chronically ill or the elderly may receive guidance in specific procedures while remaining at home. Telehealth has also made it easier for healthcare workers in remote field settings to obtain advice from professionals elsewhere in diagnosis, care, and referral of patients. Training can sometimes also be delivered via telehealth schemes or related technologies such as eHealth, which uses small computers and the internet. Well-designed telehealth schemes can improve healthcare access and outcomes, particularly for chronic disease treatment and vulnerable groups. Not only do they reduce demands on crowded facilities, but they also create cost savings and make the health sector more We Offer Telehealth Directions: Prepare the Breadfruit: Peel the breadfruit with a sharp knife and cut into quarters. Remove the core and slice very thinly. Dry the Slices: Pat slices dry with paper towels to remove moisture. This helps them crisp up better during frying. Heat the Oil: Pour oil into a deep skillet or frying pan (about 2 inches deep). Heat over medium-high until hot (350–375°F / 175–190°C). Fry the Chips: Fry breadfruit slices in small batches, turning occasionally, until golden and crisp—about 3–5 minutes per batch. Do not overcrowd the pan. Drain & Season: Remove chips and place on paper towels to drain. While still hot, sprinkle with sea salt or your preferred seasoning. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving. Chips will crisp up more as they cool.

resilient. Since remote communication and treatment of patients reduce the number of health service visits, transport-related emissions and operational requirements emissions are reduced. In addition, fewer space demands can result in smaller health facilities, with concurrent reductions in construction materials, energy and water consumption, waste, and overall environmental impact.”
