Thomas was an avid high school football player with dreams of making it to the college level–and maybe, someday, even the World Cup! He trained hard and played even harder, but one misstep during a match changed everything. As he lunged for the ball, he felt a sharp pain in his ankle and crumpled to the ground. The diagnosis was quick but disheartening: an ankle sprain. Fortunately, the physiotherapists at The Physiotherapy Center LTD were on the case. We have extensive experience in identifying and treating all types of sports injuries. A significant part of our process involves conducting a whole-body assessment to ensure we identify all the factors that may impact recovery. That way, we can design our programs tailored to meet your needs. This is exactly what we did for Thomas and his ankle sprain, and we want to share his story with you to help you understand just how effective physiotherapy can be for addressing sports injuries.
Assessing Thomas’s Ankle Sprain At first, Thomas didn’t know the severity of his injury. Like many, he thought he could just ‘walk it off.’ However, the key signs of an ankle sprain were all there, including pain, swelling, and trouble putting weight on his foot. As a serious athlete, Thomas was familiar with ankle sprains. They occur when the ligaments supporting the ankle stretch beyond their limits and tear. When Thomas landed awkwardly during his match, he twisted his ankle, damaging his ligament in the process. Because ankle sprains are so common, they’re often ignored. Many athletes don’t want to miss out on competing and “play through” their injuries, and Thomas was tempted to do the same. Fortunately, his coach put a stop to it, noting to Thomas that getting proper care is critical to full recovery. What really convinced Thomas, however, was the fact that ankle sprains are susceptible to recurrent sprains, especially when not properly rehabilitated.
