Tips for Easing Swelling in Our Tropical Heat As wonderful as year-round warm weather can be for hitting the beach and lying out in the sun, it can also lead to swelling in the legs, feet, and hands. When the heat and humidity are high, your blood vessels expand, causing fluid to pool in the affected tissue (and making you more uncomfortable). How to Do It: • Schedule movement breaks to get up, stretch, and move around.
• If your job requires you to be on your feet, it’s still important to change your position and, ideally, walk around for five minutes or so. • Incorporate light exercise into your routine, such as an evening beach stroll or lap swimming in the pool. 3. Elevate and Cool : Gravity makes fluids pool in the lower body, which is why elevation helps. How to Do It: • Raise your legs above heart level for 15–20 minutes when resting. • Use cool compresses or soak your feet in cool water after a long day. • Invest in lightweight, breathable compression socks or stockings. 4. Schedule an Appointment with The Physiotherapy Center LTD: Remember, our team is always here to provide you with personalized guidance. We’re happy to provide you with the tools and strategies you need to help your body handle our island heat while keeping swelling under control!
Thankfully, the team at The Physiotherapy Center LTD is here to suggest simple, practical steps you can take to improve circulation. 1. Stay Hydrated: We know you’ve heard it before, but it bears repeating: keeping hydrated is one of the most important things you can do to avoid hot-weather discomfort, including swelling. How to Do It: • Drink plenty of water throughout the day. • Add electrolytes if you’re active or sweating more than usual. • Limit salty snacks, which can contribute to swelling. Instead, eat hydrating foods like melons, peaches, or strawberries. 2. Move Often: Staying in one position for too long (whether sitting or standing) can make swelling worse, so try to keep active.
