W elcome to the spring edition of Shawati’ , this issue is meaningful for many reasons, firstly because it marks our 15 th year in publishing, and in the dwindling world of print media, that’s quite a feat. We’ve been a storytelling curator offering fresh perspectives on local and global topics since 2007, consistently headlining and accumulating tales that together tell the story, visually and editorially of an ambitious, dedicated and innovative young Nation, with its sights set far ahead in the future. Commemorating a special event is always a time for nostalgic ref lection, a moment to take stock of achievements, and note occasional missteps. It’s vital to acknowledge and appreciate any significant milestone. We recently delved into our archives to include [within these pages] some of our most illuminating content printed in Shawati’ Magazine over the last fifteen years. Throughout the years, we’ve chronicled a multitude of events and documented the numerous accomplishments of the UAE while simultaneously highlighting global topics that span all interests in a reflection of our world today. It has been an enriching journey, filled with eye- opening experiences and special memories. And while we’ve tackled nearly every conceivable topic, there’s always one reoccurring thread that connects each issue - our mission to celebrate Abu Dhabi and her sister Emirates, through every facet of growth and prosperity. We are privileged to have had the opportunity to witness and chronicle this transformation; to include the numerous voices of bold leaders and extraordinary visionaries, at home and abroad, that have been an integral part of this remarkable metamorphosis. Our latest edition touches on many topics, but our opening section is dedicated to Emirati women and their unlimited ambitions and aspirations to create a better and more prosperous future. Women whose strength, courage and dedication are an inspiration to us all. Women who have overcome adversity, broken through the barriers and in doing so, changed the face of our world. We are proud of the incredible strides made by the UAE leaders to empower Emirati women and excited to introduce two new esteemed columnists to our Shawati’ family. Starting with Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, CEO of Alliances for Global Sustainability, Founder of the Circle of Hope Foundation, and the Co- Founder of Aurora 50. Her impassioned first piece, Saving the Heartbeat of the Earth, Together , focuses on sustainability, global impacts of climate change, and our collective
ومرحبـاً بكـم فـي عـدد الربيـع مـن مجلـة شـواطئ. لهـذا العدد مغزى خاصّ لعدة أسباب، أولاً لأنه يصادف عامَنا الخامــس عشــر فــي النشــر. وفــي عالــم الإعــام المطبــوع، المتضائــل باطّــراد، يعــدّ هــذا إنجــازاً كبيــراً قائمــاً بذاتــه. لقــد كنــا خــال هــذه 2007 المسـيرة أمنـاء علـى مـا ننشـره مـن مواضيـع. قدّمنـا منـذ العـام وجهاتِ نظرٍ جديدة حول الموضوعات المحلية والعالمية، وتصدّرنا باسـتمرار، فراكمنـا الحكايـات التـي روت معـاً، بصرياً وتحريرياً، قصّة دولة شابة طموحة ومتفانية ومبدعة، وضعت نصب أعينها أهدافها السـامية الطموحـة لمسـتقبل مشـرق. أها إن الاحتفـاء بذكـرى حـدث خـاص هـو علـى الـدوام مناسـبةٌ للحنيـن والتأمّــل؛ لحظــةٌ لتقييــم الإنجــازات، ومراجعــة الهفــوات العرَضيــة. وهنـا، لا بـدّ لنـا مـن أن نقـدر الإنجـازات التـي تحققـت بمـرور الوقـت. لقــد بحثنــا مؤخــراً فــي أرشــيفاتنا لكــي نضمّــن فــي هــذه الصفحــات بعضـاً مـن أكثـر المحتويـات المضيئـة التـي تمـت طباعتهـا فـي مجلـة شـواطئ علـى مـدار الخمسـة عشـر عامـاً الماضيـة. علـى مـرّ السـنين، قمنـا بتأريـخ العديـد مـن الأحـداث، وتوثيـق العديـد مــن الإنجــازات التــي حققتهــا دولــة الإمــارات العربيــة المتحــدة، كمــا ســلّطنا الضــوء فــي الوقــت نفســه علــى الموضوعــات العالميــة التــي تغطـي جميـع الاهتمامـات، فـي انعـكاسٍ لعالـم اليـوم. لقـد كانـت رحلـة ثريـة، مليئـة بالتجـارب المنيـرة بشـكل غيـر متوقـع، مفعمـة بالذكريـات الخاصة. وفيما عالجنا تقريباً كل المواضيع التي يمكن تصورها، فإن ثمّـة موضوعـاً متكـرراً كان يربـط بيـن كل عـدد مـن أعدادنا: إنه مهمتنا التـي أخذناهـا علـى عاتقنـا لاحتفـاء بأبوظبـي وشـقيقاتها الإمـارات، فـي جميـع جوانـب نموهـا وازدهارهـا. يشـرفنا أنْ أتيحـت لنـا الفرصـة لأن نشــهد هــذا التحــول ولأن نؤرّخــه؛ وأن تشــتمل صفحاتنــا علــى الأصـوات العديـدة للقـادة الجريئيـن وأصحاب الرؤى الاسـتثنائية، في الداخـل والخـارج، والتـي كانـت جزءاً لا يتجزأ من هذا التحول الرائع. يتطـرق أحـدث أعدادنـا عددنـا الأخيـر هـذا للعديـد مـن الموضوعـات، لكــن قســمنا الافتتاحــي مخصــص للمــرأة الإماراتيــة وطموحاتهــا وتطلعاتهـا غيـر المحـدودة فـي بنـاء مسـتقبل أفضـل وأكثـر ازدهـاراً. إن النســاء هــنّ اللواتــي تشــكّل قوتُهــنّ إن قــوة النســاء وشــجاعتُهن وتفانيهــنّ هــي مصــدرُ إلهــام لنــا جميعــاً.، إن النســاء اللواتــي تغلبــن علــى الشــدائد، وكســرن الحواجــز. قــد غيّــرن وجــه عالمنــا. نحـن فخـورون بالخطـوات المذهلـة التـي قطعهـا قـادة دولة الإمارات العربيــة المتحــدة لتمكيــن المــرأة الإماراتيــة، ومتحمســون لتقديــم اثنتيــن مــن كاتبــات الأعمــدة الموقــرات الجــدد إلــى أُســرة شــواطئ. بـدءاً مـن الشـيخة شـما بنـت سـلطان بـن خليفـة آل نهيـان، المؤسّسـة ، “ التحالفــات لاســتدامة العالميــة ” والرئيســة التنفيذيــة لمؤسســة الخيريـة، والشـريكة المؤسّسـة “ دائـرة الأمـل ” والمؤسّسـة لمؤسّسـة إنقــاذ ” . تركــز مقالتهــا الأولــى المفعمــة بالعاطفــة، “ 50 آرورا ” لــ ، علــى الاســتدامة، والتأثيــرات العالميــة لتغيــر “ً ًنبــض الأرض معــا
المنـاخ، ومسـؤوليتنا الجماعيـة لإعـادة الاتصـال ببيئتنـا وتـرك كوكـب أنظــف وأكثــر اخضــراراً للأجيــال القادمــة. يســعدنا أيضــاً أن نقــدم لكــم كاتبــة العمــود الثانيــة، ســعادة هــدى الخميــس كانــو، مؤسّســة مجموعــة أبوظبــي للثقافــة والفنــون، والمؤسّســة والمديــرة الفنيّــة دعـم المبدعيـن.. رؤيـة ” لمهرجـان أبوظبـي. تتنـاول مقالتهـا الأولـى، ، أهميــة حمايــة القطاعــات “ نحــو اســتدامة قطــاع الثقافــة والفنــون ، وتداعياتهــا -19 الثقافيــة والإبداعيــة- خاصــة بعــد جائحــة كوفيــد علـى مـدار العاميـن الماضييـن. إذ كان علـى الأفـراد والمنظمات إعادة التقييـم والتكيـف وإيجـاد طـرق مبتكـرة ليـس فقـط للصمـود والنجاة والاســتمرار بــل ولازدهــار خــال هــذا الوقــت غيــر المســتقر. وبمناســبة الحديــث عــن ريــادة المــرأة الإماراتيــة، يشــرفنا أن نجــري حواراً مع سعادة هند مانع سعيد العتيبي، أول سفيرة تمثل الإمارات العربيـة المتحـدة فـي فرنسـا. تـم تعييـن سـعادتها فـي هـذا المنصـب المرمـوق قبـل أقـل مـن عـام، وأصبحـت بالفعـل رصيـداً لا يقـدر بثمـن بين قوتين اقتصاديتين. في الواقع، فإن التآزر المذهل بين الإمارات العربيــة المتحــدة وفرنســا يعــود إلــى أوائــل الســبعينيات، ومــن ثــم انتقلـت هـذه الرابطـة مـن قـوة إلـى قـوة علـى مـدى العقـود الخمسـة الماضيـة، وتـم تعزيزهـا مـن خـال خارطـة الطريق الثنائيـة الطموحة سـنوات، للشـراكة الاسـتراتيجية بيـن الإمـارات 10 التـي تمتـد لفتـرة .2020 ]، والتـي تـم اعتمادهـا فـي يونيـو 2030-2020 وفرنسـا [ إن التـراث الثقافـي القـوي المشـترك بيـن الإمـارات العربيـة المتحـدة وفرنســا جلــيّ لا لبــس فيــه، فقــد كان البَلــدان شــريكين فــي العديــد مـن المشـاريع الفنيـة والثقافيـة المهمـة علـى مـرّ السـنين. منـذ افتتـاح ، 2006 جامعـة باريس-السـوربون أبوظبـي، التـي تأسسـت فـي العـام إلــى متحــف اللوفــر أبوظبــي الشــهير عالميــاً الــذي تــم افتتاحــه فــي . ولتعزيـز هـذا المثـال الجميـل الناصـع للتعـاون الثقافـي، 2017 العـام ، “ الحوار الثقافي الإماراتي الفرنسـي ” 2018 أطلق البَلدان في العام بهـدف تعزيـز وتمتيـن هـذه العاقـة طويلـة الأمد. وفـي أحدث تعاون الــذي افتُتــح أواخــر “ فرســاي والعالــم ” بيــن البلديــن، جــاء معــرض ينايــر فــي متحــف اللوفــر أبوظبــي. لا يعكــس هــذا المعــرض قصــة قصـر فرسـاي والملـك لويـس الرابـع عشـر فقـط، بـل يقـدّم قصـة مهمـة عـن الإنسـانية أيضـاً. وفيمــا نطــوي صفحــة هــذا العــدد المهــم، هنــاك الكثيــر لنفتخــر بــه والكثيـر الكثيـر لنتحمـس لـه. نـودّ أن نشـكركم، أيهـا القـراء الأعـزاء، فــي الداخــل والخــارج، علــى دعمكــم المســتمر وولائكــم ورعايتكــم. وأكثــر مــن ذلــك، نشــكركم علــى كونكــم جــزءاً لا يتجــزأ مــن رحلتنــا علــى مــدى خمســة عشــر عامــاً. ولا يفوتنــا ونحــن نعيــش أجــواء شــهر رمضــان المبــارك، أن نهنئكــم بحلــول الشــهر الكريــم، متمنيــن لكــم ولأحبائكــم أيامــاً مليئــة بالأمــل والسـام والفـرح، سـائلين لله أن يعيـده علـى دولـة الإمـارات والعالم أجمـع بالخيـر والبركـة.

We are equally pleased to introduce our second columnist, HE Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, Founder of ADMAF, Founder & Artistic Director of Abu Dhabi Festival. Her first piece, “Supporting Creatives: Towards Sustainability in the Culture & Creative Sectors” delves into the importance of safeguarding the cultural and creative sectors – especially after the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact over the last two years. Individuals and organisations had to reevaluate, adapt and find innovative ways to not only survive, but to thrive during this precarious time. Speaking about trailblazing Emirati women, we are privileged to bring you a dialogue with Her Excellency Hend Mana Saeed Al Otaibi, the first female Ambassador to represent the UAE in France. Her Excellency was appointed to this prestigious post less than a year back and has already become an invaluable asset between two economic powerhouses. The incredible synergy between the UAE and France dates back to the early seventies, this bond has gone from strength to strength over the last five decades and was further enhanced through the ambitious 10-year bilateral roadmap of the UAE-France strategic partnership [2020-2030] adopted in June 2020. The strong cultural patrimony shared between the UAE and France is unmistakable, they have been partners on many important arts and culture projects throughout the years. From the opening of the Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi established in 2006, to the world-famous Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum inaugurated in 2017. Further cementing this beautiful representation of cultural cooperation, in 2018, the countries established the UAE France Cultural Dialogue to further strengthen this long- standing relationship. The most recent collaboration - Versailles and the World - is an exhibition that opened in late January at Louvre Abu Dhabi. The exhibition not only reflects the story of Versailles and Louis XIV, but also conveys an important story about humanity. As we turn the page on this milestone issue, there is so much to be proud of and so much more to be excited about ahead of us. We would like to thank you, our dear readers, at home and abroad, for your continued support, loyalty and patronage. Moreover, thank you for being an integral part of our fifteen-year journey. Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi [DCT] negotiated with the French to bring a Louvre art gallery to the UAE capital. In her most recent role, she created and led the f irst strategic communications department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Before that, she worked as director of communications at Abu Dhabi Media, and also alongside His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, as an adviser. Al Otaiba has an immense responsibility ahead of her, having taken up her position shortly after the adoption of the 10-year bilateral roadmap of the UAE-France strategic partnership [2020-2030]. The roadmap seeks to enhance cooperation in numerous sectors, including advanced sciences, research and development, technology, and food security, as well as nuclear and renewable energy, education, culture, health, space, and security. France’s growing presence in the UAE is neither recent nor sudden. Its close connectionwith the UAE dates to the genesis of the country in the early seventies, thanks to the vision of the country’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Since then, bilateral relations have gone from strength to strength, and what began as military ties has blossomed into a comprehensive relationship. The culmination of five decades of intimate diplomacy between the two nations is evident across both sides. For instance, the UAE has supported the restoration of the Imperial Theatre of the Château of Fontainebleau theatre, now named after His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President, Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, while France is involved in a range of endeavours in the UAE, including art projects, universities, renewable energy, and civilian nuclear power. O ne of the most sophi st icated women in the UAE’s diplomatic scene, Her Excellency Hend Al Otaiba is a valuable link between two economic powerhouses. As the UAE’s Ambassador to France, she is the first lady to be appointed to this prestigious post. Al Otaiba has dedicated her entire career to promoting the UAE to the world, either through arts and culture or through public relations and diplomacy. Growing up in a family of inf luential diplomats – her father is HE Mana Saeed Al Otaiba, a former Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and her brother HE Yousef Al Otaiba is the UAE Ambassador to the United States – Al Otaiba developed a strong sense of public service at a young age. After graduating from university in London where she studied psychology, she obtained her master’s degrees from the Paris Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and the UAE National Defence College, an institution only attended by the nation’s brightest minds. A f luent French speaker, Al Otaiba’s first professional role was managing communications at the former Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, where she gained hands-on experience in diplomacy, as the Department of

inaugurated in 2017, French culture and language are considered as a fundamental pillar of cooperation. In 2018, the countries established the UAE France Cultural Dialogue to further strengthen this long-standing relationship. The progress made over the past few decades is set to further blossom as the two nations continue to work closely together to develop common strategic interests and strengthen their historic friendship, which is what Al Otaiba’s diplomatic mission is all about. Your Excel lency, you assumed your pos it ion as Ambassador of the UAE to France in July 2021 with a mandate to broaden and deepen bilateral ties. What are you most excited about in this new role? Indeed, “excited” is the perfect word to descr ibe my feelings: I am excited about many aspects of the role, ranging from the cultural to the diplomatic. I would also emphasise the honour that I feel. Honoured not only to have been chosen by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan but to serve my country as the first female ambassador to represent the UAE in France. Considering the UAE’s relationship with France, this is a great deal of responsibility. Your appointment comes at a time of historically strong relations between Abu Dhabi and Paris – less than one year since the adoption of a 10-year bilateral roadmap of the UAE-France strategic partnership [2020-2030]. What are some of the most important discussions or projects that you have initiated in recent months? First, it is important to mention that the UAE is home to the largest number of French companies in the Middle East, with around 600 subsidiar ies employing more than 30,000 people. We are still at the beginning of the UAE-France strategic partnership, and I look forward to seeing what the next decade will bring. Ref lecting on the major achievements of the past decade, such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and the 2009 Joint Défense Agreement, both part ies share an ambition to strengthen bilateral relations and mutual developments by setting out further goals and joint initiatives. Since assuming my current posit ion, I have had the pr ivi lege to witness the Rafale deal – a histor ical ly significant deal which will see 80 Rafale fighter jets by Dassault and 12 Caracal helicopters by Airbus brought to the UAE to fur ther bol ster our defence indust r y. Looking at other sectors, ENGIE and Masdar formed a USD $5 billion strategic alliance to drive the UAE’s green hydrogen economy. The UAE and France are discussing ways of advancing bilateral cooperation with African partners in the political, security, economic, cultural, educational, and development sectors. This ref lects the high level of confidence and strong convergence of views between the two countries across a range of key issues. It supplements the ambitious

Clean energy is a key strategic field of development for the UAE. We have already achieved considerable progress toward a greener economy, and we have ambitious goals. The UAE launched the “Energy Strategy 2050”, which aims to increase the contribution of clean energy in the total energy mix from 25 per cent to 50 per cent by 2050 and reduce carbon footprint of power generation by 70 per cent. It also seeks to increase consumption efficiency of individuals and corporates by 40 per cent. Masdar City is at the forefront of this vision. It is home to the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency [IRENA], an intergovernmental organisation working on the adoption and sustainable use of renewable energies, and the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology a research-oriented university focusing on alternative energies. Masdar is bringing together efforts and resources to move the UAE towards a more sustainable economy. The UAE and France have been partners on many important arts and culture projects. Can you tell us about the latest developments and collaborations in these areas? Something that our people share with the people of France is a love for arts and culture. I believe that this is what has enabled us to build such a special connection with France, creating a cultural bridge between the West and the MENA region. A symbol of this connection is the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The museum is the first of its kind in the Arab World and sits in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s cultural district, quickly adopting a reputation as a space for cultural exchange, community engagement and progressive dialogue. The collaboration between the Louvre Abu Dhabi and its Parisian counterpart continues to develop, creating a ‘cultural corridor’ through which many exhibitions are shared. Most recently in 2019, “Rendez-vous à Paris” gathered together “L’Ecole de Paris” painters such as Chagall, Picasso and Modigliani. Among their

10-year bilateral roadmap of the UAE-France strategic partnership [2020-2030] adopted in June 2020. The two parties also welcomed the announcement of a new co-investment partnership dedicated to Africa between Bpifrance and Mubadala Investment Company. What would you say are the most promising opportunities for French companies in the UAE today, and vice versa? The UAE has a large number of opportunities to offer to French entrepreneurs, experts and talents. The country has significant economic stabi l ity and an env i ronment that is increasingly conducive to business, thanks to its strategic location, strong financial reserves, large sovereign wealth funds and sustained government spending. The UAE has emerged as one of the most welcoming countries for business, ranking first in the MENA region and ninth globally in the World Competitiveness Yearbook [WCY] 2021 published by the International Institute for Management Development [IMD] in Lausanne. To further facilitate entrepreneurship, legislation was changed on January 2 nd , allowing foreign entrepreneurs to own their business in the UAE in almost every sector. French companies will also benefit from the tremendous development to come in fields like artificial intelligence, health technology, renewable energies, biotech, agritech, fintech as well as tourism, real-estate, banking services and advances manufacturing. Cooperation and contribution from French experts, talents and investors are welcomed in each of these fields. The benefits are not one sided. France is an important partner of the UAE, with its dynamic economic ecosystem offering many opportunities for Emirati businesspeople to be involved in solving the imminent challenges that climate change is posing.

The UAE and France announced in 2018 that they would celebrate the UAE’s Golden Jubilee – the country’s 50 th anniversary on 2 December, 2021 – with a series of activities and events in both countries. Can you tell us more about these joint celebrations? What message would you like to convey to the people of France on this special day? In Paris, we celebrated the UAE’s Golden Jubilee by hosting a wonderful reception at the Palais de la Bourse in Paris. It was my first time hosting since arriving in Paris! Back in the UAE, we launched “Projects of the 50”, an exciting series of developmental and economic projects that aim to accelerate and champion the UAE’s growth in all sectors. They include widening our visa schemes, suppor t ing loca l ly based businesses and at t ract ing foreign investment. I am particularly excited to see the introduction of the ‘Green visa’, which expands the self- residency status to investors, entrepreneurs, top students, and graduates – giving highly skilled individuals the chance to make the UAE their base. This programme will enable the UAE to become an even more attractive destination for experts and promising talent from across the world, France included. We are working tirelessly to create the right conditions for ambitions to be achieved – from creating start-ups to expanding business activities or re-locating to the UAE from abroad. To the people of France, I say: this is just the beginning of our journey together. You have always chosen public service over other arenas in your career, promoting the UAE to the world through arts and culture or through public relations and diplomacy. What encouraged you to pursue a career in the public sector? To me, it is a natural next step. Being from a family of diplomats, I learned from a young age to value a strong sense of public service. My curiosity pushed me to learn several foreign languages while simultaneously gaining an understanding of different cultures and ways of thinking. قلب الحي الثقافي في أبوظبي ويكتسب بسرعة سمعة باعتباره حيزاً للتبادل الثقافي وإشراك المجتمع والحوار التقدمي. يواصــل التعــاون بيــن اللوفــر أبوظبــي ونظيــره الباريســي تطــوره يجـري مـن خالـه تبـادل العديـد “ ممـر ثقافـي ” مـن خـال إنشـاء موعـد ” ، جمـع معـرض 2019 مـن المعـارض. وبالأمـس القريـب فـي ، ومنهم شـاغال وبيكاسـو “ مدرسـة باريس ” رسـامي “ في باريس رسمها “ وموديلياني. ومن أعمالهم لوحة “صورة شخصية لديدي وتمثـل أوديـت هايـدن، أول زوجـة للرسـام 1919 موديليانـي فـي هنــري هايــدن. ولقــي المعــرض، الــذي عرضــت فيــه للمــرة الأولــى هـذه اللوحـات علـى جمهـور الشـرق الأوسـط، ترحيباً مذهـاً. ويُعد 2022 ، الــذي أقيــم منــذ ينايــر “ قصــر فرســاي والعالــم ” معــرض ويصـور قصـر فرسـاي والديـوان الملكـي للويـس الرابـع عشـر، مـن ثمار التعاون الراهنة. فـي إطـار دورك المهنـي الأول فـي إدارة الاتصـال فـي هيئـة أبوظبـي للسـياحة والثقافـة، اشـتركت فـي المفاوضـات مـع فرنسـا لاسـتقدام صالة عرض فنية من اللوفر إلى العاصمة، وسافرت مرات عديدة إلى باريس لإنجاز هذا الهدف. كيف أسـهمت هـذه التجربـة فـي تسـهيل مهمتـك الحاليـة باعتبارك مبعوثة الإمارات العربية المتحدة إلى فرنسا؟ كنـت جـزءاً مـن الفريـق المشـارك فـي المفاوضات مع فرنسـا، وكان حبــي لفرنســا وإتقانــي اللغــة الفرنســية عامــاً مســاعداً إلــى حــد بعيــد. واســتطعت الانتبــاه تدريجيــاً إلــى جوانــب كثيــرة مــن التفاعـات فـي السـلك الدبلوماسـي التـي تمتـاز بالدقـة. ولا شـك بــأن هــذه التجــارب مــا زالــت تثــري فهمــي للأجــواء التــي أعمــل فيها حالياً.
work, “Portrait of Dédie” painted by Modigliani in 1919, represents Odette Hayden, the first wife of painter Henri Hayden. This exhibition was the first time that these paintings were introduced to a Middle Eastern public and were incredibly well received. A current collaboration being exhibited since January 2022 is “Versailles and the World”, which depicts the Palace of Versailles and the Court of Louis XIV. As part of your f irst professional role managing communications at Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, you were involved in the negotiations with France to bring a Louvre art gallery to the capital, and you travelled several times to Paris for this purpose. In what way did this experience facilitate your current role as the UAE’s envoy to France? I was part of the team involved in the negotiations with France, and being francophone and Francophile helped a lot. Many aspects of interactions in the diplomatic panel are subtle, and I have picked these up gradually. These experiences no doubt continue to enrich my understanding of the environments in which I now operate. These are only some of the things thatmade this a fascinating project to work on, and I loved seeing what culture can achieve. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is more than a museum – it is the embodiment of the UAE-France relationship.
