THE vast and venerable British Museum, founded 260 years ago, is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. Since 2009, Abu Dhabi has been working in collaboration with it to create the Sheikh Zayed National Museum on Saadiyat Island. This is scheduled to open in 2012 or 2013, and will be the centerpiece of one of the boldest plans ever to create a cultural district of international standing all at one go.

Arabic is one of the most widely used alphabets in the world. It flourished with the creation of the Holy Qur’an and the spread of Islam. Since Islam prohibits figurative representations (sacred drawings), script is the only representational medium. For this reason, Arabic calligraphy developed in many creative ways over time as it spread across the world due to numerous holy wars and proselytizing. In non-Arabic-speaking countries that converted to Islam, such as Iran, the Arabic alphabet was adopted by adding letters for missing phonemes. * Many countries represented in this map use Latin alphabets as a second language such as French and English besides their local scripts.
