PATIENT SPOTLIGHTS

“I have less limitation!” Success Story: Julio Velazquez

“Laser therapy is for me!” Success Story: Rose Marie Dure

“I came to therapy after my third back surgery. Physical therapy was unique here with the manual therapy they offer. My bending, lifting, twisting, and range of motion have all improved. I need my cane less and have less pain when walking. I have less limitation than before. I look forward to doing the exercises and receiving the manual therapy. Overall, my experience has been wonderful and very professional.”

“When I arrived here, I was walking with my spine curved and could not straighten my back without a great amount of pain. After completing the course of exercises and massage, I have found it a little easier to stand straighter. I hoped to see increased improvement, so I also opted to do laser therapy, which I believe has made a difference in my abilities and some lessening of pain. My thanks to each and everyone who has made this a more pleasant experience then I had hoped.”

You’re never too old to reap the benefits of exercise... Did You Know?

In a study of 6700 people 60 or over, strength training exercises were found to improve physical function, including physical activity level, walking, strength and reducing disability.

This coming Thanksgiving Day, what are you thankful for? Dr. Todd: My wife and kids, and all the blessings I have received from God. Jenn: The many blessing my family and I have had this year so far. Happy healthy kids, being married to my best friend , having a great support system and getting to be able to work at OBTS! Joe: My newborn son Nathan. Being a new father is very challenging but also extremely fun. I feel like the luckiest guy on earth to have Nathan. Megan: My family. I have a beautiful nephewwhowill be celebrating his first Thanksgiving with us. My family keeps expanding with my siblings getting married this year… how close we all are and the unconditional support and love I receive from them all. Danni: My family and the new baby that will be arriving in May. Angie: After everything that has happened this year, I am thankful that my daughter Ashley is ok…thankful for the rest of my family and friends that have been there to give their support…and thankful that I take the next day off to clean and rest up from having a house full. LOL Ana: Family, loved ones…who understand my craziness…my moods…my everything. I don’t know where I’ll be without them. Sachelle: My family…my health…my life. Valerie: Being withmy family this thanksgiving…first Thanksgiving my brother will be married. Erica: My family and loved ones. I have lost too many loved ones in the last couple of years, which has reminded me to cherish every moment with family and friends because tomorrow is not guarantead. Every day is a gift and there is no better day than Thanksgiving to celebrate it. Trina: My family, friends, and the people I surround myself with… thankful for how blessed I am. Noel: I am thankful for many things but I am most thankful for the people in my life: family, friends, co-workers, and clients. My life would not be as as awesome, exciting, happy, fulfilling, funny, beautiful, and worth living without them. Stephanie: My family and friends…I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them. Arlan: To my creator who’s always there to guide…my family for unconditional love…and the team that we have at OBTS for helping us all thrive this year.

What’s your favorite part of Thanksgiving Day?

Dr. Todd: Having the day off and spending time with the family. Jenn: Football rivalry and naps! We have quite the variety of football fans in the family. Everyone knows how it is eating all that delicious food, then taking a nap while you wait for seconds! Joe: The appetizers my mom makes. She makes bacon wraps with onion that has been a tradition for over ten years! Megan: I love helping my mom cook and of course enjoying the delicious food all weekend. We also decorate our dining table with leaves, candles, and a big ceramic turkey in the middle. Danni: The meal preparation. Everyone is in the kitchen working together towards a common goal of getting the food on the table; it’s quality family time. Angie: The part where we get family together that doesn’t get to see each other all the time. My house is full with love and happiness that day. Ana: The turkey and the drinking. Yum! Sachelle: Being with loved ones. Valerie: Great conversations we all have…with football on in the background. Erica: Getting our whole family together in one place. Now that my generation is all getting older, married, and most of us have children, we never get together like we use to when we were younger. I have a few family members that I may not see for another year. Trina: I get to see all the people I care about and I get to be around them all day. Noel: Being surrounded by family and friends and Lots of FOOD. Stephanie: Cooking and spending time with family. Arlan: Grilling the turkey for my family…then seeing the satisfaction in their face at dinner.

Is your lower back or leg pain, numbness, or tingling due to SCIATICA? Find Out In This Simple 30-Seconds Self-Test! • Have you or someone you know and care about ever missed work due to sciatica or back pain? • Missed out on a family vacation or activity because you were afraid to aggravate your sciatica? • Found yourself worrying more about your pain, numbness, and tingling rather than living your life? You know what I mean… You get frustrated because you can’t get through the store aisles without leaning on the cart. You feel helpless and embarrassed because you have to sit down after every few minutes of standing or walking, asking people to wait for you. You just can’t get a good night’s rest, almost finding it impossible to get a comfortable position And what’s worse is, it can play with your mind. You start worrying that something else might be horribly wrong. You get concerned with all the dangerous side effects from the pain pills you’re taking just to get by. You get depressed, feeling like you’re disappointing your friends, loved ones, and family. What is sciatica? Sciatica is a condition most people refer to when they experience pain down their leg due to a problem in the back or buttocks. Simply put, sciatica has 3 common causes: 1. Herniated Discs 2. Stenosis or Arthritis 3. Pelvic or sacroiliac joint problem When you match the right treatment with the right cause, the symptoms should go away. But if you do the wrong type of treatment, let’s say for herniated disc when in fact you are suffering from stenosis or arthritis, then the condition will get aggravated. Dear Fellow NW Indiana Resident, Lower back pain and sciatica can really be a “pain in the butt.”

Here’s the test… • Sit on a comfortable chair with your back unsupported. • Now slump…and look down. • Now raise and straighten one leg, with toes in the air. • Repeat for the other side. • If your leg with pain, numbness, or tingling does not go up as high as the other leg, you likely have sciatica. • Your next step is to see what’s causing the pressure on your sciatic nerve.
