The VankleekHill Fiddling, StepDancing and SquareDancing competition seems to
be improving with age.
Reviews were rave after the 15 th
edition of the event was held on the weekend.
“We had one of our best competitions ever,” relates Valerie Allen, president of the
association that organizes the event.
Attracting about 100 competitors each
year, the contest features talent from a large
area, with many dancers and musicians
travelling longdistances to take part. Several
competitors knoweachotherwell, since they
follow the same circuit.
For example, Ellen Rice-Hogan, who
competed in the 10-12 step dancing division,
came with her mother from their farm near
Venosta,Québec, about anhour’sdrivenorth
of Ottawa. Her next stop on the summer
itinerary is Bobcaygeon, near Peterborough.
The activity has enjoyed the support of
local sponsors over the last 15 years, notes
Valerie Allen.
Some changes are in the works, however,
for the 16 th
edition. The 2012 competitionwill
have a showcase format.
