Health Project of the Year
This project was the restoration of a listed former primary school building to create a multi-use community facility. The very careful retention and reuse of the existing fabric has been exemplary. The judges were impressed by the quality of work undertaken and the dedication to the conservation ethos demonstrated by the contractor and its supply chain. This project demonstrates the ability of existing disused semi- derelict buildings to deliver fantastic facilities that meet current needs without compromise. It has delivered a low carbon solution that retains important historical heritage for the local community that is a credit to P&K McKaigue Ltd and their client. This state-of-the-art unit underwent a major refurbishment to create a modern non-clinical space together with a rooftop extension that will provide a relaxing, therapeutic environment for patients and their families. The judges were impressed by the delivery of this project which was constructed within a live working environment while dealing with the issues of Covid distancing. The new entrance lobby is a high-quality, light-filled space, with artwork installation throughout in accordance with healthcare policy. The fine attention to detail is witnessed throughout, with an extremely high-quality finish. The complex brief creates an outstanding light filled environment for care.
