Outstanding Contributor

Achieving Excellence in Partnering WINNER: FLYNN HARBERTON NORTH, BELFAST

WINNER: DONAL MCGLOIN TRACEY BROTHERS

The Harberton School North Campus is a demonstration of what can be achieved when the client, the design team, the project management team, the contractor and their supply chain all work together to deliver something that could so easily not have happened if it was not for the determination of everyone involved. The result of this was to have over 100 additional places for pupils with Special Educational Needs available at the end of a five-week contract that turned outdated and redundant building stock into accommodation that was fit for purpose.

Donal McGloin from Tracey Brothers was recognised with the Outstanding Contributor Award. Since starting with Tracey Brothers as a Quantity Surveyor in 1987, Donal progressed through multi-functional roles to his current role as Senior Contracts Manager. He has always been at the forefront of engaging with new technologies and sustainability in construction with notable boundary pushing projects of their time. For example: the Atlantic Technological University Sligo, Engineering and Computing facility (2000) – one of Ireland’s first revolutionary smart buildings; the developer-led D&B of Waterways Ireland Headquarters (2008), which Donal successfully managed from concept stage through Design & Construction to successfully achieve the highest scoring BREEAM Excellent in Northern Ireland at that time. Most recently, the D&B of South West College Erne Campus, the world’s first and largest Passivhaus Premium and BREEAM Outstanding educational building. These projects demonstrate Donal’s ability to embrace new technologies and meet new industry challenges. On both Waterways and South West College respectively, Donal managed D&B teams who had never previously delivered BREEAM (Waterways) nor Passivhaus Premium (SW College). This is illustrative of Donal’s leadership skills and passion for continuous improvement. Always learning from new challenges and educating himself, Donal is a qualified PassivHaus designer. Judges were impressed by his ability to “get the best out of people,” his extensive personal career development and his mentorship to many industry trainees and graduates.
