PROJECT
ULSTER UNIVERSITY BELFAST CAMPUS
ARCHITECTURAL SUPPORT
M cAdam was approached by its bid submission, design development and ultimately construction delivery of the prestigious Ulster University Belfast Campus scheme. Following the contract award, McAdams embedded two senior staff in the FCBStudios’ office in Belfast, which had been assembled specifically for delivery of this project. During the next 10 years, McAdam assisted with technical design development and contract procurement Lead Architect FCBStudios to be the architectural support for advice to ensure that the project delivered was a best value solution. Commenting, Martin Hare Director of McAdam said, “The author of the design is clearly FCBStudios and we were delighted to assist them in all aspects of the project in areas that they felt our skill set and experience was best suited. “The working relationship remained The structure included a deep piled basement, which had to be excavated into the underlying water-bearing drift and Sherwood Sandstone bedrock. The bedrock is an important and heavily protected water resource which is used elsewhere in the Lagan Valley for drinking water supply. The construction involved designing a dewatering scheme to control groundwater levels using a network of carefully positioned pumping boreholes drilled through the floor of the excavation into the aquifer. A Discharge Consent and Abstraction License was obtained from the regulators, and a programme of water level and quality monitoring was implemented to ensure that the abstraction was not causing any long term hydraulic or water quality effects and was sustainable in
excellent throughout and exposure to FCBStudios’ working methodologies proved to be an exceptionally good teaching forum, allowing some of their skill sets to be absorbed and taken on board by our team.”

the completed project, David McLorinan, Managing Director for MCL said, “Sacyr Somague was very knowledgeable regarding the importance of the environmental
monitoring programme
and put measures in place to ensure the integrity of the dewatering system was not compromised throughout the challenging and complex basement construction phase.”
