S tructural steel specialist, M.Hasson & Sons Ltd. was entrusted with designing, fabricating and installing heavy duty structural elements for the Ulster University Belfast Campus project. Specifically, a 6m x 30m link bridge which spans across York Street; five heavy duty vierendeel girders – ranging from 20- to 80 tonnes each – which support 11 floors and pick up the end of the link bridge; decorative cambered cellform beams forming the floor structure, finished to a spec for one-hour fire protection in-house and completed with sheer studs at the top flange which incorporated the floor structure with each floor. The final element was the skybridge constructed from five cantilevered bridge sections. Describing it as a flagship project, Paul Hasson, Director, explained how it showcased the company’s wide-ranging capabilities. “There was a lot of heavy
engineering involved, including heavy duty butt welding and the vierendeel girders, but at the same time there was very intricate work which utilised our Tekla 3D modelling and the skills of our expert fabricators to great effect.”

ACOUSTIC AND OAK STRIP PANELS
L eading UK and Ireland building services and products provider, Branniff Joinery, brought their expertise to the new Belfast Campus by supplying and installing acoustic panels and specialist oak strip panelling. The scope of works included manufacturing and fitting 50,000 linear metres of oak strip panelling to the internal public areas and 2,000m2 of acoustic panels to the lecture theatres.
Commenting on the completed job, Francis Branniff, Managing Director of Branniff Joinery said, “The project was challenging at times, but we got there in the end, and the finished job looks unbelievable. We are delighted to have been involved.” With a workshop and
offices based just outside Banbridge and a further office in Glasgow, Branniff Joinery operates across the UK and Ireland.
