PROJECT

ULSTER UNIVERSITY BELFAST CAMPUS

CONCRETE QUALITY CONTROL work had particular focus on exposed concrete columns.

T hroughout the Ulster University Belfast campus, exposed concrete forms a major part of the architectural design concept, but the concrete also has a critical function in not only structural capacity but also fire protection and building durability. Amphora Consulting was appointed during construction stage to ensure the highest level of quality control throughout the building’s concrete elements. This

In partnership with Saycr, Ulster University and the wider project consultant team, Amphora Consulting developed a world- leading method of inspection which delivered quality confidence levels in excess of 95% throughout the building. Quality results were obtained from significant electromagnetic scanning and testing of the concrete elements throughout the building. This enabled Amphora Consulting to determine, through analyses, whether there was adequate bond between the concrete and the reinforcing steel, the concrete durability, fire protection resistance and potential for cracking in the concrete. This delivered an end product which not only looks architecturally impressive but will stand the test of time.

LOLER TESTING FOR LIFTING POINTS HEYN rigging and testing engineers are LEEA certified to be able to determine if lift points can be safely used by lift engineers who would be installing the lifts and maintaining them on an ongoing basis. To do this HEYN engineers developed a bespoke testing kit and were able to certify the points according to their safe working load. HEYN’s ability to provide a bespoke testing kit for the project and the online H andling solutions provider, HEYN Engineering tested all lift shaft elevator points and connection points on the walls for the Ulster University Belfast Campus project.

system that is available for real time access to certifications as they are carried out was invaluable to allowing the lift engineers to start work as soon as possible. Commenting on the completed project Robert Bleakley, Lifting Equipment & Testing Manager said, “It was a pleasure to be involved in the early stages of this build, testing over 70 lifting points and connections to enable other contractors to complete their work safely and efficiently.”
