Creating a History Walk at Engelhorn Pond Juanjoel Orozco Project Mentor(s): Susan Rivera, PhD One aspect of sustainability and environmentalism that is often overlooked is the
educational/informative aspect. Many times, the work students have put into sustainability projects go unnoticed by those not invested in the subject. Projects coordinated by campus often meet the same issue. This project aims to display the vast efforts of environmentalism and sustainability projects done by the students and campus over the years. The medium of this project will be approximately 7-8 durable signs around the perimeter of Engelhorn Pond. Each sign will contain information regarding the history of Environmental/Sustainable efforts relating to the pond as well as general sustainability efforts. One sign will display the meaning of sustainability from all three foundations of it (Social, Environmental and Economic) along with a map of the pond and signs. At the end of the trail, a special sign will feature a variety of projects led by students and campus over many years. The purpose of which is to educate people on the meaning of sustainability and environment as well as the efforts that many have put in over the years. Key Locations for Electric Vehicle Charger Implementation on Campus Cameron Pruden Project Mentor(s): Susan Rivera, PhD The U.S. heavily relies on motorized transport, primarily from combustion engines sourced on petroleum. Transportation accounts for 70% of all our petroleum consumption, accounting for roughly 31% of all energy related carbon emissions. This consumption directly exacerbates the dreaded effects of climate change. Electric vehicle usage can greatly reduce this petroleum reliance. Sales of electric vehicles in the U.S. are projected to reach 40%-50% of total passenger car sales by 2030. A CWU goal is to install 30 electric vehicle chargers on campus by 2030 to support the demand. Less than half of this goal has been met, with no plans for expansion in place. In this project, a detailed locational map was created for the expansion of electric vehicle chargers on the CWU campus. Through research on various aspects of feasibility—including electrical routing, accessibility, concentration, and dynamics of electric vehicle use—key locations have been identified. This involved stakeholder consultation with university parking & police, facilities, City of Ellensburg, and other sustainability figures. The outcome being the direct integration of plans with CWU, providing a concrete basis of finalized installation locations prepared for a rollout of implementation.
