Artificial Intelligence, Intellectual Property, and Judicial Decisions Shinhae Hwang Project Mentor(s): Rodrigo Murataya, PhD As Artificial Intelligence technology has evolved, there were legal challenges against the use of AI, especially in the intellectual property. Recently, the US Supreme Court refused to hear an argument over copyrights for AI-generated works in Thaler v. Perlmutter. This decision was referenced in the Copyright Act of 1976 and the precedent established in Burrow-Giles Lithographic Co. v. Sarony (1884). These and several judicial decisions continue to shape the legal landscape for AI-generated works. This research explores important legal decisions related to AI and Intellectual Property.

Establishing Evidence Based Practice: The Hidden In Plain Sight Project Asa Olsen; Jasmine Montgomery; Joshua Mackie; Dana Culley; Karole-Anne Alviso; Eliann Carr, PhD; Ellensburg Police Department Project Mentor(s): Cody Stoddard, PhD Exploring meaningful programs that address specific threats to a community is important for community-oriented policing, but it is essential to have supporting evidence that those programs will successfully mitigate these identified concerns. The Hidden In Plain Sight program is nationally recognized with many variants depending on communities and implementation. Ellensburg Police Department developed a Hidden In Plain Sight program that incorporates the better practices of other programs, which emphasizes parent-child communication as the foundation and educates parents on modern indicators of poor decision making. This research explores the process of establishing the Ellensburg Police Department Hidden In Plain Sight program into an evidence-based practice through pre- and post-surveys capturing potential changes in parents’/guardians’ preparedness; ability to communicate; and familiarity with alcohol, marijuana, nicotine, mental health, and online safety. This research will consist of parents and guardians throughout Kittitas and Yakima County who participate in this specific Hidden In Plain Sight program. Future findings from this research will be compared to juvenile related crime trends to show whether this program is successful at mitigating common issues in our community. Presentation Type: Oral Presentation (May 20, 9:30am–5:00pm) Keywords: evidence-based practice, data informed, community education SOURCE Form ID: 122
