Pens and Swords: The Making of Godsworn Jan Tilley Project Mentor(s): Matthew Martinson, Jennifer Lipton, Anne Cubilie
Four people. Two worlds. One war. Between the time put into developing worlds, magic systems, and cultures, to the thousands of words written to become familiar with the characters a story intends to bring to life, to the rounds upon rounds of editing, and to the hours spent drawing, marketing, and developing friendships with other writers, self-publishing is a journey that takes more than one may expect. And it is one that proves intimidating to even experienced writers. Over three and a half years, one author set themselves out on this journey, resulting in the planning, writing, illustrating, and self- publishing of an epic fantasy titled Godsworn. Gods beyond their worlds pull the strings. The jaws of plans older than civilizations close with worlds between their teeth. If anything is going to survive, it will take the impossible. The festival will also feature a sustainable lunch highlighting the importance of education surrounding sustainable procurement, agriculture, and the life cycle of our food. This lunch will also have a low carbon footprint, as the menu items will be sourced locally and include mostly plant-based ingredients. The primary purpose of this event is to showcase to students and parents visiting SOURCE that there are many free and inclusive student resources prioritizing sustainability in their operations. The three pillars of sustainability, environmental, social, and economic, will be represented by the groups present. After this event, students will feel represented and empowered by the clubs and organizations here on campus. This festival will inspire students to get involved with CWU Sustainability and the student ambassadors, evolving previous ideas of sustainability, broadening understanding, and maximizing engagement with such great departments. This opportunity will also allow students to meet the faces behind such important organizations on campus, strengthening our campus community. As the CWU Sustainability Department is leading this special session, we will aim to collaborate with students to implement their creative ideas to create local and widespread change to increase overall sustainability and equity and make CWU an even more prosperous campus.
