Physical Activity Levels, Symptom Burden, and Kinesiophobia in Individuals with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia: A Feasibility Study Kate Grimit, Melia Biglin*; Margaret Rosenfeld, MD; Jared M. Dickinson, PhD; Ana Paula Freire, PhD Project Mentor(s): Ana Paula Freire, PT, MSc, PhD Background: Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare condition that affects how the lungs can clear mucus, which leads to breathing troubles and a reduced quality of life. While physical activity (PA) is known to improve health in patients with many different chronic conditions, it is still unclear how active people with PCD are as compared to healthy individuals. This research aids in understanding how activity levels guide better care and treatment strategies. Objective: This is a feasibility study assessing physical activity levels between adults with PCD and a healthy control group. Methods: Participants will be recruited online and complete questionnaires about their activity, symptoms, and beliefs about movement (Long Last 7 Days International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Long Form, PCD-QOL, and Breathlessness Beliefs Questionnaire), while also wearing a small motion-tracking device (ActiGraph wGT3X-BT Accelerometer) for seven days to objectively measure daily PA. Feasibility will be assessed by analyzing recruitment rate, adherence to wear protocol rate, questionnaire completion rate, and the study retention rate. These outcomes will be assessed together and separately. Anticipated Results: A recruitment rate of 60-80%, adherence to wear protocol rate of 40-50%, questionnaire completion rate of 50-60%, and a retention rate of 40-50% will be the benchmarks of study feasibility. Conclusion: This study will lay the groundwork for future larger and more in-depth physical activity research in the PCD community. These findings will improve knowledge of activity patterns in individuals with PCD and develop strategies to safely increase physical activity, improving long-term health outcomes.
