improved to 15 percent in 2023 compared to 10 percent in 2021. The truth is, European forests are growing in size, and between 2005 and 2020, grew by a 58,390 square kilometers — an area larger than Switzer- land and the equivalent to 1,500 football pitches of forest growth every day. The survey also showed regional differences in understanding: • Italy has the highest number of consumers (71 percent) who believe European forests are reduc- ing in size; Finland has the lowest number of consumers (48 percent) who believe European forests are reduc- ing in size; • Denmark has the highest number of consum- ers (24 percent) who believe European forests are growing; • Only 9 percent of UK consumers believe that European forests are growing; In the UK, there has been a shift in the way 18- 24 year olds (Gen Z) think. In 2021, they had the highest belief that forests are shrinking (69 per- cent) whereas, in 2023, they had the lowest belief that forests are shrinking (44 percent). The survey found that only 18 percent of European consumers understood that the paper recycling rate exceeds 60 percent. Again, this has improved slightly from 2021 when it was 16 percent. The survey showed that 41 percent of European consumers believe that paper and pa- per packaging is wasteful. In reality, Europe’s paper recycling rate is currently 74 percent, with paper packaging even higher at 83 percent. • In 2020, a total of 56 million tons of paper was collected and recycled in Europe; • Belgium has the highest number of consumers (26 percent) who believe the European recycling rate exceeds 60 percent; • Denmark has the lowest number of consumers (13 percent) who believe the European recycling rate exceeds 60 percent; • 67 percent of consumers think only recycled pa- per should be used. Flint Group Launches PRISM Sustainability Framework Flint Group has outlined its plans to reduce its environmental impact under its new sustainability framework. The company’s PRISM sustainability framework includes a range of targets such as circular econo- my product development, reducing operational im- pacts, and building a diverse workforce. Plans include Flint Group’s recent commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), with the company reducing carbon emissions in line with the 1.5°C scenario set out in the goals of the Paris Agreement. Different Colors In the same way a glass prism separates white light into different colors, the company’s PRISM framework breaks the complexity of sustainability down into three essential parts: Products, People, and the Planet. It is designed to embed sustainabil- ity into the business, focusing on the most critical issues affecting the organization, its customers, and its stakeholders. Specifically by designing products for the circular economy, helping customers be more efficient, and lowering the carbon footprint of its core products.

The festivities continued into the evening with a dinner at the historic Palazzo Verità Poeta, located in Verona’s city center. all air traffic). If left unchecked, the ICT footprint could increase to 14 percent of global emissions by 2040. Despite this, 56 percent of European con- sumers surveyed in the report think electronic com- munication is more environmentally friendly than paper communication. Whilst again, this figure has improved from 2021 (60 percent), it still underlines the ongoing misconceptions around the sustain- ability of both the paper and electronic communi- cations. Environmental Impact As U.S. consumers become increasingly aware of the environmental impacts of the products they use every day, there remains a wide gap between perception and reality when it comes to the sus- tainability of paper products – but the gap has nar- rowed over the past two years. Overall, 44 percent of consumers believe paper products are bad for the environment, down from 48 percent in 2021. Packaging Perception (Cont’d from Page 3)

Fifty-five percent of those surveyed believe U.S. forests are shrinking, an improvement over 2021, when 60 percent of consumers said they believe U.S. forest area is decreasing. The facts: U.S. forest area grew by 18 million acres between 1990 and 2020, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization’s most recent Global Forest Resources Assessment. That’s an area equivalent to 1,200 NFL football fields every day. According to the survey, only 12 percent of con- sumers know the U.S. recycling rate exceeds 60 percent, up from 11 percent in 2021. Four in 10 consumers believe the paper recycling rate is less than 30 percent. The facts: More than two-thirds (68 percent) of all paper and paper-based packag- ing in the U.S. is recycled, and more than 91 per- cent of corrugated cardboard is recycled according to the American Forest and Paper Association. the country, compared to plastics at 9 percent, glass at 25 percent and metals at 34 percent. Sixty-eight percent of U.S. consumers surveyed believe that electronic communication is more en- vironmentally friendly than print on paper, up from 67 percent in 2021. Greenhouse Gas The EPA reports that the pulp and paper industry accounts for only 0.6 percent of total U.S. green- house gas (GHG) emissions – which isn’t surprising since 64 percent of the energy needs at U.S. pulp and paper mills are met using renewable, carbon neutral biofuels, mostly biomass. In contrast, the rapidly expanding information communication technology (ICT) industry has a growing carbon footprint arising from GHGs re- leased during all stages of the electronics life cycle. A recent meta-analysis (Freitag, Berners-Lee, et al, 2022) estimates the ICT industry is responsible for up to 3.9 percent of global GHG emissions and that those emissions will continue to increase without both regulatory and industrial intervention. Unlike the recycling of paper products, only 15 percent of the approximately 7 million metric tons of e-waste generated in the United States each year gets recycled, according to the 2020 Global E-waste Monitor. Mondi To Modernize Dynäs Kraft Paper Mill In Sweden Mondi, a provider of sustainable packaging and paper, is upgrading its Dynäs pulp and paper mill in Sweden. The modernization program will report- edly increase efficiency and further improve the overall environmental performance of the mill to meet customer demand for sustainable paper and paper-based packaging solutions. The Dynäs mill produces speciality kraft papers, used for a variety of paper-based packaging solu- tions for industrial and consumer industries. The project includes the installation and upgrade of machinery and equipment such as a new cook- ing plant and bark boiler, which will improve the mill’s energy efficiency. Upgrades will also further reduce air and water emissions, and result in better wood utilisation at the mill. The Swedish Land and Environmental Court (Mark-och Miljödomstolen) approved Mondi’s works application in March 2023. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
