IAM AWESOME, WHO ARE YOU? In a time long, long ago, a large and beautifully carved sculpture in the shape of an infinity symbol stood high on the edge of the lake. The sculpture celebrated two communities living together in harmony. It is still unknown what caused the battle between the Hill people and the Lake people, but the Storm of Storms appeared at the same time. The Symbol of Fortune and Prosperity was forever lost in the lake, and the town felt the wrath of Mother Nature for many years. Over time, the two communities eventually merged into one, although it has always been an uneasy co-existence.

THE ORDINARY WORLD I am here. I am now.

The day started like any ordinary day. However, this was not going to be an ordinary day.

This is me. Can’t you see? Same Same, is the game. IN THE KNOWN WE DO NOT GROW.

Iam Awesome, a descendant of the Lake people, proudly wore his favourite red t-shirt because he liked the number eight, and this shirt had a large number eight on the front. It was early morning, and he had taken his normal route through the main street, saying hello to the shopkeepers as he made his way to the jetty on the edge of the lake. He loved the holidays because he could go fishing every day. The little village of Tronno, where Iam was born, was a small country town that hadn’t embraced much of the big-city way of life. Kids ran barefoot and played in the fields. When the streetlights came on at dusk, every kid knew it was time to head home for dinner. Tronno sat on the edge of a large saltwater lake. There were many islands way out in the middle, which meant that it was great for sailing all year round.

Iam dreamed of exploring the islands, but so far, he’d only been to one of the smaller islands. His dad had taken him there in a little dinghy they’d built together last year. Iam had named it “The Lady Joan” after his mother. Iam’s dad worked in the big city and had to be there a lot, but Iam always loved sailing with him when he was home. Iam’s mother was studying at home to be a nurse, but her asthma made some days hard for her.

This week, Iam’s dad was back in the city again. So before he could fish, Iam had to get some supplies for his mother’s asthma. As Iam walked down the main street, he saw his drama teacher from school, Miss McKay, in the corner café across the road.

She was sitting with two other people. Mrs. Andersen, who people said owned half of the town, and Miss Byrne, who owned the Woo Woo magic shop that sold coloured magical stones and the flowery smelling oils, that Iam’s mother liked. Together, they waved at Iam. Everyone in town knew who Iam was because of his name. Iam waved back.

Iam was just about to enter the shop that sold the medicine he had to buy for his mother when he noticed the local tough kids coming up the street from the other direction. They were led by a ten-year-old girl who everyone called M. She was a descendant of the Hill people. They yelled out and teased him about his name being Awesome, just as they always did.

“You’re not awesome,” M said.

Her little group of motley followers laughed. “That’s my name,” Iam replied.

As the group passed him and walked up the street, he heard them yell out, “Awesome!” They laughed loudly, mocking him.

Iam turned around and looked at his reflection in the shop window. He quietly said to himself, “Iam Awesome!”

THE CALL TO ADVENTURE Good or bad, the time has come. Destiny awaits the chosen one. THIS QUEST MUST BE UNDERTAKEN.

Iam headed down to the jetty, his smile now gone, feeling upset about being picked on again. He struggled to understand why people were so nasty. He wandered slowly along the shore of the lake. The tide was low, and all the oyster shells that grew on the rocks were now exposed. Iam picked at these with a stick. The morning sun reflected off something in the water and flashed that caught Iam’s eye. What looked like a large old bottle was firmly wedged under a log. Iam stepped into the shallow, weedy water and felt the mud squelch between his toes as he headed slowly out to the bottle. Little did Iam know that he was being watched from a tree up above by a large group of pure white cockatoos that chatted softly amongst themselves.
