Cont. from Page 19 Thomas Brooks said, “ He sees all, the most secret turnings and windings of our hearts.” Dark ness and light are both alike to the God to whom we have pledged our loyalty. The Psalmist empha sizes this truth: “ If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee” (Psalm 139:11, 12). GodKnows All Motives What is it that constrains us to do the things we do? The moti vation of our busy lives deter mines what we do to be accept able or not acceptable in God’s sight. Men may see our wonder ful deeds without knowing our motives. Hidden from men our motives may be, but God “know- eth the secrets of the heart” (Psalm 44:21). Insulting theGodof Heaven With the all-seeing eye of God upon us, it would seem as though He would challenge us, “Wilt thou do thy sinning in My sight?” This is the great aggravation of sin— it is committed before the King of kings, be fore the Omnipresent One. To sin in God’s presence is surely to insult the God of heav en. This should make us avoid all occasions of sin. Shall the eye of the schoolmaster warn the stu dent against faulty work? Shall the eye of the father constrain his son to obedience? Shall the public eye upon us cause us to walk carefully? Then surely shall the all-seeing eye of God upon us keep us from sinning. What un belief and defiance are in the heart when we are more afraid of other eyes than God’s! The Sin in Secret—The Shame in Public Many a man has tasted the bit ter cup of public shame as his secret sins were brought to light and into public view. David, king of Israel, “despised the command ment of the Lord, to do evil in his
sight” and took unto him another man’s wife, Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite . . . “ But the thing that David had done dis pleased the Lord” (II Sam. 11: 27). David acted as though this were a safe secret as he sinned again to cover his adulterous con duct. Nathan charged David: “Thou hast killed Uriah the Hit tite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife” (II Sam. 12:9). Had not Moses by the Holy Spirit warned hun dreds of years before this: “ Be sure your sin will find you out” (Numbers 23:23)? Occasionto Blaspheme David proved the truth of these words when God’s prophet smote his conscience as he said, “Thus saith the Lord . . . thou didst it secretly; but I will do this thing [expose it] before all Israel, and before the sun.” Then the prophet added the terrific, heartbreaking condemnation “because by this deed thou hast given great occa sion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme” (II Sam. 12:11- 14). Every SecretSin to Judgment “ For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; nei ther anything hid, that shall not be known and come abroad” ; “ For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Luke 8:17; Eccles. 12:14). Jesus Christ theStandard “ In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ” (Rom. 2:16). “Name of Jesus! dearest Name! Bread of heaven, and halm of love; Oil of gladness, surest claim To the treasures stored above. “Jesus gives forgiveness free, Jesus cleanses all my stains; Jesus gives His life to me, Jesus always He remains.” — T ersteegen
