Sandy happy to share her love of Tasmania with others

After eight years living in Tasmania, Sandy Liang couldn’t be prouder of her new home and loves the fact that her job in tourism allows her to share her passion for Tasmania with others. Originally from Taiwan, Sandy has two jobs with the JAC Group in Launceston – working in the ticket office at Penny Royal Adventures, and at the cellar door at Josef Chromy Wines where she helps with wine tastings. While the two roles are different, Sandy enjoys the fact that both involve providing great customer service and the opportunity to meet and help people from all over the world.

“Because I’m originally from Taiwan I speak Mandarin and Taiwanese. We have a lot of Mandarin-speaking visitors coming to Tasmania now so it’s nice to be able to help those customers by speaking to them in their language.” Sandy completed a Certificate III in Tourism at TasTAFE Drysdale last year and says tourism is a natural fit for her. “The first thing that I like is being around people. That is always what I’ve liked and it’s the reason why I chose to study tourism. My parents ran a travel agency in Taiwan so tourism has always been in my DNA. “I’m very grateful I joined the tourism course. My teacher, Rachel, was a very great mentor to me. When I finished the course I felt very prepared. We learnt a lot of general things like what Tasmania has to offer, its produce and what to do to make the customer feel comfortable. “Rachel arranged a lot of work experience for us. We got to work with people in the real world who are very good at what they do. TAFE provided me with a super-great opportunity and really prepared me to work in tourism.”

Sandy sees a future for herself in tourism and it seems the industry agrees. In 2017 she was awarded the “Most Likely to Succeed” award at Tourism Northern Tasmania’s Champions of Tourism awards. “I like fine food and wine and I like people, so working in tourism I am able to share all of the things I like. “I’ve lived in Tasmania for eight years now- it’s my new home and through my job I can now introduce people to my new home town as a great place with great produce, especially to Asian customers. That makes me very happy.” To find out more about TasTAFE Drysdale courses visit: www.tastafe.tas.edu.au or phone: 1300 655 307.
