MACQUARIE HOSPITAL NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2025

From My desk

From My Desk.. It has already been an active start to the year with the temporary capping of Manning beds which was only possible due to the work of amazing staff who always rise to every situation and support consumers each step of the way. Thank you all for working together so positively in what was a challenging situation and a time of uncertainty for consumers, carers and staff. We have welcomed a new rotation of registrars to the service and are happy to say that despite the difficult industrial situation for NSW Psychiatrists the Macquarie Consultant Psychiatrists continue to provide their invaluable support for junior medical staff and consumers, which is greatly appreciated by all. It seems too late to wish everyone a Happy New Year as it is mid-February – but Happy 2025 anyway!!

We said farewell to Klara Glaw in January as she headed off to enjoy a new job and new home on the South Coast. Klara joined the team at a time of big change as the Rehabilitation Program Team Manager and worked with enthusiasm and skill, building a new team and developing a new group rehabilitation program which received very positive feedback from consumers across the hospital. Klara will be greatly missed both by her team and the service as a whole. This week we are also saying goodbye to Noi Wheeler, who has been working here at Macquarie in Health Information Services since 2006. Alongside her tireless efforts maintaining medical records (long before scanning and EMR), Noi also managed to create a beautiful garden outside the HIS building that has given pleasure to so many over the years. We wish Noi all the best on her well-deserved retirement.

Yesterday the hospital welcomed visiting academics from Universitas Indonesia who are working in collaboration with UTS School of Nursing & Midwifery. The group had a tour of the hospital and discussions with nursing staff around mental health care in Australia then the Indonesian team presented on their work “Enhancing mental health knowledge and skills for community nurses in Solo, Indonesia” which was incredibly interesting and inspiring. Euan Macleay also presented on his PhD research relating to collaborative care planning which was very well received by all. CHAP L I NC Y CORNE R

Decades ago, I travelled alone on the “Fairstar” to England. Being my first trip away from Australia, I was anxious at the thought. My parents gave me a Bible with this verse from Psalms highlighted. Armed with new confidence, I took many risks. And I survived! We stand at the gate of a new year. The unknown lies ahead. With so much change happening it is easy to feel unsettled and apprehensive. As Mark Twain commented, “The only one who likes change is a wet baby.”

Yet, visiting the wards, I am inspired by long-term residents who epitomise resilience in the way they are adapting to changes in the Hospital. They are an example to us all. To quote Maya Angelou “Having courage does not mean that we are unafraid. Having courage and showing courage means we face our fears. We are able to say, ‘I have fallen, but I will get up.’” There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens, (Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV) And every ending is a new beginning.

MENTAL HEALTH REHABILITATION: A REFLECTION

Mental Health rehabilitation is fundamental in helping a person with severe mental illness to progress beyond clinical improvement to full functional capacity and participation in life (Lloyd et al, 2008).

Rehabilitation is a multifaceted intervention along a continuum of care and involves a variety of goals, processes, providers and settings. Lloyd et al (2008) describes a 3-r model of Remediation, Restoration and Reconnection process which overlap and influence each another. Remediation is the reduction of psychological, physical and social effects of mental health concerns through the acute phase of illness. Restoration is enabling and gaining/regaining capabilities with the person together with Remediation. Reconnection is reconnecting and establishing a place for the person in the community, exploring opportunities for independence, social inclusion with a renewed sense of hope and confidence. Application of recovery and trauma informed principles within a rehabilitation framework is to consider systematically the person’s recovery goals which is support by clinical, personal, social and functional recovery. In other words, our clinical strategies can help a person towards their goals (A comprehensive care plan). This approach enables mental health professionals to focus on the person’s personal recovery goals while considering parallel goals/strategies in the clinical, social, and role-functioning areas. Mental health professionals can reconceptualise recovery and trauma informed care as involving more than symptom remission, and strategies can be tailored to the aspects of recovery that are of importance to the person in care.

NSLHD STAFF QUIT NICOTINE PILOT PROGRAM

Staff starting their Quit smoking or vaping journey can now access 12 weeks of FREE Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).

During 2025, the usual 4 weeks of free staff NRT is increased by 8 weeks, thanks to a pilot program between Population Health Promotion and Occupational Staff Health. This extension is in line with the NSW Heath NRT guidelines which recommend a minimum of 12 weeks of NRT for any quit attempt. For the first time the use of ‘combination therapy’ is available, which allows staff to access nicotine patches, as well as other fast acting NRT including Spray, Gum and Lozenges.

Occupational Staff Health assessment and support to manage nicotine dependence. 12 weeks of FREE Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), including patches and additional fast acting NRT. Referral or sign-up to the NSW Quitline 137848 or www.icanquit.com.au. Support for staff includes:

🚀 ALMOST THERE! PROGRAM UPDATE & WHAT’S NEXT WITH COMPREHENSIVE CARE PLANNING

Dear all,

We’re almost at the finish line! 🎉 Yes, we’ve hit a few speed bumps along the way (because what’s a project without a little drama?), but nothing we couldn’t handle. The great news is that MQH executives and the MHDA Standard 5 Implementation Working Group have given us the green light to move forward—so here we go! Now, it’s time to get you all prepped. We’ll be running foundation training across different days to make sure no one misses out (no excuses! 😉 ). There’ll also be some upskilling sessions, and we’re keeping the door open for your feedback as we go live. And speaking of go-live… once we’re up and running, we’re counting on your full support to make this a success. Let’s do this together— because teamwork makes the dream work! Thanks, legends!

Thanks
