Welcome to our quarterly newsletter, where we will keep you up to date with current developments and innovations within our Interior Fit-Out Division. We are delighted to be raising awareness of our Cycle for Hope charity fundraiser which takes place on the 10th of October in Dublin. This month we will introduce you to one of our team, Business Development and Bid Manager Lisa Jennings . We also give you insight into a recently completed project, Genesis Aviation . We also have a feature focus on Sustainable Development and we are proud to share with you some of our goals relating to the environment, climate change, responsible business, innovation and community. If you would like to know more about our sustainability strategy, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Does the culture of a business define the workplace design?
The short answer is no, not always. However, the correct answer is that it should always define and influence the workplace design. This blog will explore the link between workplace design and business culture, understanding factors such as the culture gap, culture definition and the elements that make up a business culture.
The layout of a workspace can be staid, dull and uninspiring and often, not even questioned.
There could be structural reasons for a certain layout, things that can’t be moved, or cases where the original layout was just designed and built without any attention or consideration to the culture the business wanted to create.

Culture is probably a term that many businesses don’t fully understand. It is only in recent times that business owners are starting to build an understanding of employee wellbeing, job satisfaction, motivation, and retention, that culture has even become a talking point.
The Culture Gap
To tackle the culture gap, business owners need to have a clear vision of where they want their business to be. It is necessary to assess where the business currently is and then evaluate the strategies, practices and cultural behaviours required to get to where they aim to be. The workplace environment is a key part of emphasising the right behaviours and facilitating the correct practices that will enable the strategy to be fulfilled for a successful outcome. For example, if a business identifies that ‘working as a team’ is one of the key behaviours required for successful implementation of the strategy, then a workplace environment that does not facilitate collaboration is not as likely to reinforce that kind of behaviour. Similarly, if the business requires creativity or innovation, does theworkplace design lend itself to that by providing quiet areas for contemplation and focus? By thinking about the behaviours required to achieve the strategy, businesses can start to develop the necessary environments that these behaviours would thrive in and factor them into their workplace design.

Defining the business culture Understanding what your existing culture is, is the key to taking small steps towards improving it. It can be defined as simply, ‘the way we do things around here’, the way things are naturally processed, from relationships between departments, to decision making roles and responsibilities. For example, a micro-management style, will provide a different culture, to an empowered management style and so it is important to carry out focused analysis of what the current ‘way’ is within the company.
Elements of business culture
The factors that can determine your business culture are: Your businesses vision, mission and values Knowing what they are and communicating them adequately with your people. A teamwho knows where they’re going, why they are going there and how they are expected to get there, is a contributing factor to a business’s success. Your workplace needs to support those key elements. Your people This could refer to how your management lead, how skilled and motivated your people are and what their level of drive and ambition is. These things will have a huge impact on the way your people behave. Your workplace environment Are your employees’basic environmental needs taken care of? Do you provide the right amount of natural light, fresh air, clean surroundings, facilities as a minimum, but then also thinking about the processes and actions that take place and whether the environment is conducive to In alignment with workplace environment, the processes are very closely linked and have a huge impact on business culture. The methods by which tasks are achieved can make the difference in someone’s day between having a good day, or a real headache. If your workplace layout makes processes more the flow of activity? difficult than they need to be, your employees are going to feel that frustration. Communication Communication is important in any business. Not only in how you convey your business’s mission, vision and values, but also in how you share information and ideas as an entire team. Poor interdepartmental communication can have a negative impact on the employee’s ability to do their job and the overall company morale. Your workplace environment should aim to facilitate a positive experience. Reward and recognition There is no one-size-fits-all strategy when it comes to reward and recognition. At a basic level, reward and recognition comes from the pay packet, but businesses are recognising the need to offer more to retain good staff. Alongside learning & development and employee benefits, cool & trendy workspaces are increasingly being used as a key differentiator to entice younger generations to work for a business. In summary, whilst sometimes there is a contradiction between the company’s brand values and the ‘real’ culture of the organisation, it is the people that define the culture, and the workspace has the power to enable it to thrive. This underpins just how important it is to get the workplace environment just right to build the company culture that you really want. Genesis aviation Genesis is a leading full-service aircraft leasing company that provides innovative and tailored aircraft leasing solutions to global airline customers. Ardmac were appointed to carry out the internal fit out of the seventh floor of the newly constructed Block I within Central Park for Genesis.
The new headquarters for Genesis comprises a new reception area, both cellular and open plan offices, conference and meeting rooms, a wellness room, canteen area and support spaces. Utilising contemporary design with muted tones and subtle colours that reflect the corporate identity of Genesis, the project included bespoke joinery to ceilings and walls within the reception and circulation areas.

Ardmac’s scope included the formation of all rooms, new ceiling and lighting arrangements, high end acoustic and sound absorption materials, new floor, wall and ceiling finishes along with works to the mechanical and electrical services including new plant and equipment. Throughout the project we used collaborative tools such as Last Planner and Procore, which supported Lean project planning, recording and execution of the works. Working Smart resulted in the project being delivered on time to a very satisfied client. “...Ardmac set about the works in a thoroughly professional manner... Lisa can often be found out and about seeking new opportunities within the marketplace, making & building relationships, whilst also progressing opportunities through a tender or negotiation process. Lisa ensures that any document we submit to potential clients answers their specific requirements whilst also assuring them of our capability to be their contractor of choice. Speaking to Lisa, you can see that she is passionate about her role; “my job is like being a private investigator; I do my research, find out everything I can about potential opportunities, what is most important for the client and who are the key decision makers are – then it is about creating a document that sells the value we will bring to their project.” Lisa was involved in the company rebrand in 2017, so she has a special connection to Ardmac; “I just love the Ardmac brand and it was a really exciting time to be involved in, to see the company evolve to what it is today, what the brand means not only to our staff but for our clients too. I’m so proud of where I work and this makes my job in sales, a whole lot easier.”

As a Business Development & Bid Manager, no day is the same for Lisa, that’s part of the reason why she likes it. One day she could be strategizing, the next she could be hitting the road, meeting people, or writing successful bids/tenders, but one thing that is consistent is the thrill of a deadline and excitement of winning, it is something she thrives off. “I have often sat up working through the night on a bid/tender, tiredness never kicks as the adrenaline to get to the finish line keeps you going. The pressure is even more worth the while when you win a really important project, then see it all come together on site. From seeing a project go from the initial site walk to the final high quality product makes me really proud of what I do.” At Ardmac we are about our people and we fully appreciate people like Lisa, they are what make our business great and so when people do go above and beyond, we have our reward and recognition initiatives to support and thank our people. Lisa continues; “I know that reward and recognition is really important to Ardmac. I remember working on a really important submission and after a few long nights pulling it together. Once we got it submitted I was told to take the afternoon off to catch up on some sleep, only to wake up to a lovely big bunch of flowers from our Director of Interiors, Sarah.” Throughout COVID-19 and the various stages of lockdown, Ardmac were keen to ensure that their business culture continued to thrive and rolled out several key initiatives that Lisa reflects on.
“Communication was really encouraged; we were always well informed about what was happening. The focus was about keeping safe and looking after our families. There was a genuine understanding and awareness from the very top levels, they understood the challenges people faced when working from home and the levels of flexibility that our staff needed.” Juggling a family through-out a pandemic was no easy task, but Lisa particularly loved Ardmac’s efforts to embrace the family by running various competitions. “Mykids lovebeing involvedwithanythingwork related, and although they were frustrated not getting out to mix with friends they got involved with various exercise initiatives, step counting challenges and competitions – only to get a few unexpected prizes through the post – all things that helped make life easier at home.” Lisa has 4 children ranging from 7 through to 19 years old, so home life is extremely busy. The last 18 months has seen Ardmac introduce a hybrid home-office working policy which is making life a lot easier, with very sporty children, Lisa is never off the road, so is now able juggle work life balance so much easier. Spending time with her family is just as important to Lisa, they are an active family that love being outdoors, mountain climbing and traveling to explore new places.

Confidential Client at grand canal square
Ardmac Interiors have recently been awarded the consolidation project for a confidential client in 1 Grand Canal Square. The project involves reconfiguration of Level 1 in order to incorporate the staff consolidating from Level 2 but also as a result of changing workplace practices.
The client wanted a partner that would work hand-in-hand with them in order to deliver the requirements of the project including its fast track nature.
