COULD YOU ACTUALLY HAVE LOW IRON?

I heard an interesting phrase the other day. “The doctor of the future is the patient.” More patients now demand access to knowledge to make informed decisions about their health. Providing the information you need to make those decisions is one of the motivators for me with this newsletter. Of course, we are not going to begin performing life saving surgeries or the necessary services doctors provide. Instead, wouldn’t it be nice to know what you can do to be at your best health and why, as opposed to having a blood test and not understanding what was tested, what it means or not even having a copy of the results? I want to use this month’s cover article to discuss an overlooked mineral, iron. Our bodies rely on many vitamins and nutrients to function every day, and one of the most important nutrients is iron. Consider this: When we breathe in oxygen, iron is used to push it throughout the body, making iron responsible for producing hemoglobin, a vital building block of red blood cells that carries oxygen. In a simple sense, iron is just as important as breathing — literally.

meat, nuts, and quinoa. These foods are common in a standard diet, and there are a number of people who can consume enough iron to sustain normal bodily functions. Interestingly, the typical person consumes about 20 milligrams of iron each day; 10% of that is absorbed, and 75% of it goes toward the production of hemoglobin.

Here’s the bad news: Nearly 10 million people in the U.S. are

deficient in iron. Low iron symptoms can include brain fog, fatigue, cold hands, and heart palpitations. Additionally, your body’s enzymes — including those in your digestive system — may not be able to function properly because they also rely on iron. People with digestive issues are more likely to have an iron deficiency because the body may not be able to absorb the iron from foods. Women who are menstruating are also at a higher risk due to monthly blood loss. For the same reason, men are typically not iron deficient. Symptoms of an iron deficiency can also mirror other conditions, such as thyroid issues. That’s why, when patients come to me for a full blood test, I always test for ferritin. Ferritin is a marker that tells you how much iron you have available. A normal value

should be above 40. Many people confuse iron with hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is what they test you for before you donate blood. If it is low, they won’t take your blood. However, your hemoglobin could be normal and your ferritin can be low (low iron). Your iron is depleted first as iron is used to make hemoglobin. So, don’t confuse hemoglobin with iron. Test iron separately with ferritin. The bottom line is that iron deficiency is more common than we think. It is very treatable and easy to find if you do the right tests. Contact me if you need help with getting a blood test. –Dr. Tom Sladic To order supplements or blood work, call 248-912-2962.

Now, with this comes good news and bad news.

The good news is that we can consume iron through many foods, such as spinach,

DO YOU NEED MORE MAGNESIUM?

HERE’S HOW TO FIND OUT — AND GET MORE!

Are you tired or weak with a loss of appetite, vomiting, or nausea? It could be a magnesium deficiency — though, according to the National Library of Medicine, you’re more likely to lack iron. Magnesium deficiencies are rare and most often seen in patients who consume excess alcohol, have certain gastrointestinal conditions, or have diabetes. The symptoms above may indicate your magnesium levels have dipped too low. If allowed to progress, people will experience problems sleeping, numbness, tingling, muscle contractions or cramps, seizures, personality changes, abnormal heart rhythms, and chest pain.

science behind those claims. Epsom salts, or magnesium sulfate, are chemical compounds made of minerals that dissolve in water. While there’s not enough data to support the claims that a hot bath with a cup of Epsom salts can raise your magnesium levels, anecdotal evidence suggests it may help. USE HIGH-QUALITY SUPPLEMENTS Unfortunately, some people may not be able to absorb magnesium through food or baths and may only find relief through supplements. Remember, talking to your doctor before starting a new regimen is essential to see what’s right for you. While the only way to know for sure if your body might be a little low on this crucial mineral is through a blood test at your doctor’s office, these tips and tricks can help you spot an issue worth bringing to your primary care physician’s attention before it becomes a bigger problem.

your favorite leafy greens, lentils, legumes, and crunchy nuts can pack quite a punch and is easily customizable to your preferences. TAKE A BATH Need an excuse to take more baths? A magnesium deficiency can serve that purpose, though the jury is still out on the

Luckily, adding this vital mineral back into your body is relatively simple.

SWEET POTATO AND AVOCADO SALAD

PATIENT SPOTLIGHT: SARA B. Personalized Care, Lasting Results “Before finding Natural Solutions for Health, I was really struggling. I had experienced multiple miscarriages, my thyroid was completely out of whack, and my digestive system was a constant source of distress. I would wake up feeling tired and drained, and by the evening, I could barely keep my eyes open. It was starting to impact every aspect of my life, from my work productivity to my ability to enjoy time with family and friends. “When I first visited Dr. Tom Sladic, he took the time to listen to my concerns and symptoms. He ordered comprehensive lab testing to get to the root cause of what was going on rather than just trying to mask the problems with medications. The results showed that my thyroid was imbalanced, and I also had some gut imbalance contributing to my digestive woes. “Dr. Sladic put me on a personalized treatment plan that included targeted nutritional supplements, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications. I was a bit skeptical at first, but I was desperate for relief, so I committed fully to the program. And I’m so glad I did! In just a few weeks, I started noticing dramatic improvements. “My energy levels skyrocketed. I no longer felt that morning or evening fatigue that had become the norm. My digestion settled down, and I was able to enjoy foods that had previously caused me problems. And my thyroid levels stabilized, bringing an end to the hormonal roller coaster. “Quite simply, this program has given me my life back. I can be fully present and engaged at work and in my personal life. And the amazing part is that Dr. Sladic and his team have been right there supporting me every step of the way. They’ve been responsive whenever I’ve had a question or concern, and the supplement orders are always processed quickly. “I can’t thank the team at Natural Solutions for Health enough. They’ve given me a new lease on life, and I’m forever grateful. If you’re struggling with any health issues, I’d highly encourage you to reach out to them. It just might change your life like it did mine.” –Sara B.

4. The Role of a Growth Mindset in Overcoming Challenges

PSYCHOLOGY OF SUCCESS Harnessing the Power of a Growth Mindset

While there are no treadmills for the mind or ellipticals for our neurons, science tells us that mental exercise can help us obtain a growth mindset . The American Psychological Association defines a growth mindset as “the belief that a person’s intelligence and abilities can grow and improve with practice.” A growth mindset is the antithesis of a “fixed mindset,” which people exhibit when they quickly give up if they can’t solve a problem. Nurturing a growth mindset, in contrast, can help you view failure or setbacks as opportunities for learning. MORE THAN EFFORT Having a growth mindset is about more than just effort. It is the belief that you can develop your abilities and talents, as well as a perspective on how you approach life’s lessons and learning. That belief allows you to learn more

quickly and achieve greater results, no matter what you aim to achieve. This does not mean simply having an open mind; it also means finding a way to continue striving to improve your knowledge, attitude, and performance. Some call it having “grit.” CULTIVATING SUCCESS With a growth mindset, success plays second fiddle to self-improvement. Celebrating the effort we put into each task motivates and encourages us to work harder and accomplish more in the future. Rather than focusing on the destination, the focus is on the journey. A growth mindset is a great way to become more positive, successful, and adaptable. By incorporating more facets of a growth mindset into your life, you will be well on your way to changing things for the better.
