BLESSED ASSURANCE Words by Fanny Crosby Music by Mrs. ]. F. Knapp

“My friend, Mrs. Knapp, composed a melody, and played it over to me two or three times on the piano,” wrote Fanny Crosby. “ She then asked me what it said, and I immediately re plied ‘Blessed Assurance.’ ” Within a few minutes Fanny Crosby had writ ten the complete poem, just as it stands today, and the song was first published in 1873. Mrs. Knapp’s maiden name was Phoebe Palmer. She was born in New York City, March 8, 1839. Her father was the noted Methodist evangelist, Dr. Walter C. Palmer. She attained widespread reputation as writer of music and verse, specializing in writ ing for children. At the age of sixteen she married Joseph Fairchild Knapp, a prominent Sunday-school worker. He was a successful business man, be came quite wealthy, and organized the famous Metropolitan Life Insur ance Company. She published more than five hun dred of her own gospel song com positions, but “ Blessed Assurance” is the only one which survived. She died in Maine, July 10, 1908. In 1874 S. J. Vail brought one of his newly-composed tunes to Fanny Cros by, asking that she write words for it. As he was playing it for her on the piano, she suddenly exclaimed, “ That chorus says ‘Close to Thee!’ ” She im mediately wrote the poem which is now widely-used. Silas Jones Vail was bom October 6, 1818 at Brooklyn New York. He was a hatter by trade, a successful bus iness man, and composed and pub lished many gospel songs. His best- known compositions are “ Close to Thee,” “ Scatter Seeds Of Kindness,” “ Gates Ajar,” and “Nothing But Leaves.” He died May 20, 1884, in Brooklyn.
