shirt in Russia, a brown shirt in Germany, a blue shirt in Britain, a silver shirt in America! And, lo! in Italy, a black shirt which, we fear, the wanderer mistakes as cloth ing a friend. As in all the ages past, among the nations the wanderer finds no ease, nor does the sole o f his foot find rest. He has not forgotten Haman! Herod is still the nightmare o f his memory! And, lo! now Hitler arises before him! Once again there is “ a trembling heart, and failing o f eyes, and sorrow of mind.” Once again his life hangs in doubt before him, and he has “ none assurance of life.” Once again, in the morning he cries, “ Would God it were even!” And in the evening he cries, “ Would God it were morning!” (Deut. 28 :67). A day o f great trouble and sorrow is approaching: “ Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness ? A la s! for that day is great, so that none is like it : it is even the time o f Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out o f it” (Jer. 30:6, 7 ). Surely, great have been the transgressions o f Israel, or Omnipotence would not have permitted the Serpent to so fearfully bruise the wanderer’s heel upon the rough pathways of the centuries. We shall not minimize his evil doings. O f them, we shall speak more specifically later. But Israel is still the earthly seed, and God keeps His covenants. For Israel, therefore, the rainbow o f promise appears in the blackest cloud: Yea, “ H e shall be saved out o f it!” O Israel, in the healing o f your wounds (Jer. 30:17) shall all the wounds o f men be healed. In your blessing shall all mankind be blessed (Gen. 12:3; Zech. 8 :13 ). In your peace shall all peoples find peace (Zech. 9:9, 10). In your rest (Jer. 30:10) shall all nations have rest (Isa. 2 :4 ). In your prosperity (Amos 9:13-15) shall all the children o f men know prosperity (Psa. 72:16, 17). In Dear Miss Scott : I have been so helped by your letters to girls, that I want to bring a problem to you, too. I do not know what you will think o f me, but while I know I am a Christian, I can never testify. W e are urged to testify in our young peo ple’s meetings, but I do not know what to say, and do not think I ought to get up and talk unless I really feel led to do so. It has always been hard for me to speak of.things that lie close to my heart. I do not believe God means for every one to speak in public. I think sometimes it is better to live the Christian life and let this speak, rather than words. What do you think about this ?—-A. B. My dear A . B . : God’s Word says, “ Ye are my witnesses.” If, when you state that you do not know what to say for Him, you mean you do not have any testimony in your heart, you should o f course not attempt to give one. Rather, you should go to your knees, and ask God to flood your soul with such a joy in Himself that you could not keep still. You will not grow very fast spiritually unless you are magnifying the name o f the Lord and telling what He is doing for you. If He is helping you to overcome tempta tions, and if He is giving you victories and blessings in your
your glory (Isa. 60:1-3) shall all the earth be filled with glory (Psa. 72:18, 19). And in your salvation “ all the ends o f the earth shall see the salvation o f our God” (Isa. 5 2 :9 ,10)— “ For salvation is o f the Jews” (John 4 :22 ). Therefore, O ye Gentiles: “ Pray fo r the peace o f Jerusalem” (Psa. 122:6). Easter Number The March issue o f T h e K in g ’ s B u s in e s s will be one of particular interest and value. Contributors have fur nished exceptionally strong articles on the resurrection theme, appropriate for the Easter season. In addition to these special features, Dr. William Evans will continue his series of these messages on “ The Mastership o f Christ.” The Heathen World In all the heathen countries o f the world, after a cen tury o f missionary work, there are but 1,100,000 mem bers o f Christian churches. Suppose there were but ten members: Our obligation to “ preach the gospel to every creature” would not in the least be diminished. One-fifth o f the earth’s inhabitants are in the triangular space between the Himalayas and Cape Comorin. There are in this space 175,000,000 Hindus, 50,000,000 Mohamme dans, and 50,000,000 devil worshipers. More than 250,- 000,000 o f these are unable to read and write. In China, the Christian churches claim memberships totaling about 45,000. “ What are 45,000 among 350,000,000?” So it is all over the heathen world. The missionaries have made only a beginning, so far as the real work they have at heart is concerned. They have civilized better than they have evangelized. “ Lord, what wilt thou have we to d o?” “ Here am I ; send me.” -—W . E . E d m o n d s . Christian life, gratitude will not allow you to remain silent. You say it is not easy for you to testify. It is not easy, at first, for most people; but have you experienced the joy that comes through doing a hard thing for Christ? You need the spirit o f Caleb, who chose for his portion a hard place where giants dwelt. Learn to know the thrill that comes from launching out on God’s promises and proving Him in the difficult things. Part o f living the life o f a Christian is witnessing to others and telling them what God means to you. Unques tionably, the life and words must give the same testimony. Do not be troubled if you cannot express yourself fluently. God often uses the stumbling word that comes from a sincere heart. Failure to speak for Him, because o f inabil ity to speak well, is usually a mark o f pride and considera tion o f what people will think, rather than an indication of a sincere desire to please the Lord. When you feel inclined to sit still, and not to speak for Christ, be sure that you know who is leading you in this matter. Learn, by prompt and full obedience, to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s direction. When He leads you to testify, respond without a question or a moment’s hesitation. I f you will do this, your own spiritual life will be enriched, others will be helped, and, best o f all, your Lord will be glorified.
