himself headed the procession, improvis ing at intervals with melodies on his harp, the chorus replying with refrains. For the preparation o f the building of the new temple, David greatly increased the force of musicians. The total number o f singers and players reached 4,000. O f these, 288 were masters o f the theory and practice of music, and were subdivided into twenty-four classes, each of which was under the leadership o f one of the sons of the three supervising Levites. David also set a national precedent when he organized a trained choir o f men and women, called the Royal Chapel Choir, in his court. Under the reign o f Solomon : The gran deur and solemnity of Solomon’s develop ment of the temple worship has never been reached or surpassed. According to the account of Josephus, thé Jewish historian, Solomon commanded that 200,000 trumpets and trombones should be constructed for the dedication o f the temple service, as well as for permanent use thereafter; also that 40,000 stringed instruments, such as harps and psalteries, should be fashioned of the finest brass. For the choir of the Levites, 200,000 garments o f fine linen were to be made. The service under Solomon marked the high point o f musical culture and poetical power o f the Hebrew nation.—C. C. 4. Jesus Christ is Risen Today

Jesus Christ is risen today, Our triumphant holy day, Who did once upon the cross Suffer to redeem our loss. Hymns o f praise, then, let us sing Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Who endured the cross and grave, Sinners to redeem and save. Now be God the Father praised, With the Son from death upraised, And the Spirit ever blest: One true God by all confessed. Thou art coming, O my Saviour, Thou art coming, O my King, In Thy beauty all resplendent, In Thy glory all transcendent; Well may we rejoice and sing: Coming! in the opening east Herald brightness slowly swells; Coming! O my glorious Priest, Hear we not Thy golden bells? O the joy to see Thee reigning, Thee, my own beloved Lord! Every tongue Thy name confessing, Worship, honor, glory, blessing Brought to Thee with glad accord; Thee, my Master and my Friend, Vindicated and enthroned; Unto earth’s remotest end Glorified, adored, and owned. Hymn—“He Leadeth Me.” Hymn—“Lead On, O King Eternal.” Prayer. QuartetA“ In the Hour of Trial.” Quiet Hour. Hymn—“What A Friend We Have in Jesus.” Leader’s Message. Testimonies. Hymn—“ Stand up for Jesus.” Benediction—Psalm 19:14. The title o f this lesson is unfortunate. If by “religion” is meant Christ’s attitude toward the claims of the law, the passage in Luke, which is suggested for the les son, gives the answer in story form. But “religion,” as the word is commonly used today, is not synonymous with redemption, which was Christ’s one mission while on earth, the task with which He was wholly occupied. He was the fulfillment o f the law, and one cannot now be “ religious,” strictly speaking, without a heart relation to Jesus Christ. Meditation on the Lesson The incident described in Luke 10 oc curred near the close of a very busy day in Christ’s life. He was on His way to Jerusalem, there to be offered up as the Lamb that “taketh away the sin o f the world.” He had commissioned the seventy to go “two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.” As He traveled, He taught and preached, often encountering opposi tion and questioning. The lawyer (another name for scribe) mentioned here, put this query to H im : “Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” —T ranslated from the L atin . 5. Thou Art Coming, O My Saviour —F. R.
