may be stopped, and all the world may be come guilty before God . . . for by the law is the knowledge of sin . . . For all have sinned, and come short o f the glory of God” (Rom. 3:19,20,23). But a blessed provision has been made: “ Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for u s: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hang- eth on a tree . . . But the Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe” (Gal. 3:13, 22). “ By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not o f yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Eph. 2:8 ). Jesus said: “This is the work o f God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent” (John 6:29). If you really believe, you will love Him, and then you will keep His commandments. “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will mani fest myself unto him” (John 14:21). “ Free from the law, oh, happy condition, Jesus hath bled, and there is remission; Cursed by the law and bruised by the fall, Grace hath redeemed us once for all.” Leader’s Helps I. preaching; o f letting your light shine; of having an orthodoxy of behavior as well as an orthodoxy of belief. Jesus, the master Teacher, answered with another question, “ How readest thou?" By permitting the inquirer to answer from the law itself (which he was sup posed to know), Jesus avoided all carping criticism of His own teaching. After the lawyer had quoted the two great commandments which sum up all the others, Jesus said, “Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.” How ever, the man was not satisfied. He was not sure that he had lived up to this high standard. He. therefore asked one more questign: “Who is my neighbor ?” ' Jesus’ answer was the beautiful story of the good Samaritan. On first reading, the words o f Jesus, “This do, and thou shalt live,” may seem to imply that He was. teaching salvation by law rather than by grace. But on closer study, when other scriptures are consid ered, one will see that this was not the case, for there is only one way by which all men may be saved, and that is by faith in the Lord Jesus Cbrist. “The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” The scribe recognized his failure to keep this law, yet he tried to justify himself by ask ing a question. If it were possible for mere man to keep the two great commandments, he could live. But who can say, “I love the Lord with all my heart” ? The law is holy and just and good, and “we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law : that every mouth
