T h e S yrian B oy ’ s F irst S ight A little blind Syrian boy in the school at Beirut had learned to trust and love the Lord Jesus Christ. Duet—“Fade, Fade, Each Earthly Joy.” Hymn—“ I am Thine, O Lord.” Leader’s Message. Christ does not desire asceticism (1 Tim. 4:1-5). He has no pleasure in our pains. Because He wants us to be exultantly happy, He desires that we seek our joy in the way He found H is: “Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus : Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with G od: But made himself of no reputa tion, and took upon him the form o f a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death o f the cross.” Christ calls for the surrender of self- will. It is one thing for a man to deny himself, and it is a very different thing for a man to deny himself. No one wins success of any sort without some measure of self-denial. It is self-abnegation of which Christ is speaking. It is the death o f self-will which He demands. Absolute yieldedness to His will is what Christ asks of and desires for His children. Leader’s Helps I. T he G reater L oss A diamond merchant o f Hatton Garden, London, lost a packet o f diamonds valued at 5,000 pounds sterling. While addressing another packet in the post office, he laid the diamonds to one side and left the room without them. On remembering the loss, he hurried to the post office, only to find the diamonds gone. Search was made and detectives were employed, but no trace could be found o f the valuable package. The report was: “ He is prostrated over his loss.” Testimonies. Quiet Hour. Hymn—“Where He Leads Me.” Benediction—Psalm 1. Meditation on the Lesson In the scripture for this lesson, Jesus tells His disciples the conditions o f real discipleship, in language not to be misun derstood. “ If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

Hymn—“Jesus Saves I” Benediction—Jude 24.

Meditation on the Lesson The “ Golden Text” o f the Bible, John 3 :16, has been called the “Little Gospel,” for it contains the whole plan of salvation. Thousands of sermons have been preached from it, and multitudes have been saved through accepting and believing it. It un folds the sweetest story ever told to mor tal man, for it gives the plan by which lost man can find his way from darkness to light, from despair to hope, from death to life. Mr. Moody once preached a series of sermons, using this text daily for every service, taking it word by word. He said he could never exhaust its depths, though he were to preach from it all his life. The wideness o f God’s love is shown in this verse in the three words, “so,” “world,” and “whosoever.” Who can fathom the breadth, depth, length, and height o f God’s love? Within its meaning there is every dimension. “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our trans gressions from us” (breadth). “I have loved thee with an everlasting love: there fore with loving-kindness have I drawn thee” (length). He “ loved me, and gave himself for me” (depth). “Hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places” (height). God’s love in cluded the world, the greatest company; no one is omitted. “Whosoever” means every one and any one. The entrance into this great company of loved ones is by faith: “Whosoever be- lieveth in him.” How simple the gospel is ! Even the smallest child can trust and be lieve. “ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of Godl how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding ou t!” We have seen the greatness of God’s love in the vastness of its scope. Now notice it also in the gift He gave—“his only begot ten Son.” No mortal mind can grasp the magnitude o f this act. Abraham, the “ friend of God” and the father o f the faithful, came near to a realization o f this mighty love when he offered up Isaac; but even he could but faintly comprehend the mystery o f it. Jesus is the name above every name. It means Saviour, for “he shall save his peo ple from their sins.” It is unchangeable, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” It is full o f power. Martyrs have died for it. Suffering saints have been cheered by it, and discouraged hearts have been strengthened by repeat ing it. “ ‘Jesus,’ oh, how sweet the name! Leader’s Helps I. T h e N am e A bove E very N am e ‘Jesus,’ every day the same; ‘Jesus,’ let all saints proclaim Its worthy praise for ever.” II. S ome T h ings J esus H as D one for B elievers — S elected . 1. Separated them unto the gospel (Rom. 1:1; 2 Cor. 6:17). — S ayles .
