MARCH 4 Contented with Anything "Fret not thyself” (Psa. 37:1). By the grace of God, I never fret. I re pine at nothing. I am discontented with nothing. And to have persons at my ear fretting and murmuring at everything is like tearing the flesh off my bones. I see God sitting upon His throne and ruling all things well. Although, therefore, I can bear this also—to hear His government o f the world continually found fault with ( for in blaming the things which He alone can alter, we, in effect, blame Him) is such a burden to me that I cannot bear it without pain, and I bless God when it is removed.— J ohn W esley . MARCH 5 With Christ “I will not leave you comfortless” (John 14:18). That is the secret, the pith, the marrow, the center, and the kernel o f the salvation of Christ—the one thing that solves every difficulty, the master-key that opens every door. If you have the presence of Christ, you can never be alone. With Christ’s presence, sin will be different to us. When we walk with Christ as our unfailing Friend, it is terrible to fail Him; and the treachery is none the less because, on our repentance, He smiles forgiveness on us again. . . . We are kept day by day; it is not our doing, but His. We need never fear as to our equipment and our future. You may not know where the Lord will send you, but you know He will not send you anywhere, or command you to do any thing, and not be nigh. You need not trouble as to your sufficiency. He will steady your nerves, give you courage, grant you liberty, and be all you need. — W . Y. F ullerton . MARCH 6 At It Again! “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (Jas. 4:7 ). Billy Bray, a Cornish miner whose rug ged piety has been a blessing to many of God’s children, gives much instruction in his quaint way as to how to treat the temp tation of Satan. He says that one day, when he was a little down-hearted, he stood upon the brink o f a coal pit, and some one seemed to say, “Now, Billy, just throw yourself down there and be rid of all your troubles.” He knew in a minute who it was, and, drawing back, said, “ Oh, no, Satan; you can just throw yourself down there. That is your way home; but I am going to my home in a different direction.” Another time, his crop of potatoes turned out poorly; and as he was digging them in the fall, Satan was at his elbow and said, “ There, Billy, isn’t that poor pay for serv ing your Father the way you have all the year? Just see those small potatoes.” Billy stopped hoeing and replied, “Ah, Satan, at it again—talking against my Father, bless His name 1 Why, when I served you, I did not get any potatoes at all! What are you talking against Father for?” And on he went hoeing and praising the Lord. —D. W . W hittle .

MARCH 1 The Unknown Journey “He went out, not knowing whither he went’’ (Heb. 11:8). Abram began his journey without any knowledge of his ultimate destination. He obeyed a noble impulse without any dis cernment o f its consequences. He took “one step” and did not “ ask to see the distant scene.” That is faith, to do God’s will here and now, quietly leaving the re sults to Him. . . . So faith is accompanied by serenity. “He that believeth shall not make haste”—or, more literally, “shall not get into a fuss.” He shall not get into a panic, neither fetch fears from his yesterdays nor from his tomorrows. Concerning his yester days, faith says, “ Thou hast beset me be hind.” Concerning his tomorrows, faith says, “Thou hast beset me before.” Con cerning his today faith says, “Thou hast laid thine hand upon me.” That is enough —just to feel the pressure of His guiding hand.— J ohn H enry J owett . Put the question honestly to your own soul: Am I led by the Spirit o f God? He leads to Jesus! . . . Oh, the joy and peace and confidence and restfulness in such se curity, and in remembering that the Spirit Himself has covenanted and is responsible for our safe-keeping through the wilder ness I All the sons of God are led by the Spirit of God. . . . The children of God have the nature, speak the language, ren der the obedience, enj oy the confidence, and shall have the inheritance o f the sons of God. Some may be as yet but little chil dren, for there are “ babes,” and “young men,” and “ fathers” in the family, but all have the Spirit o f Christ, the Spirit of life, and love, and power.— M arcus R ainsford . MARCH 3 A Sad Proportion “ One o f them, when he saw he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God” (Lk. 17:15). He must look on Him who had done it ; he must look into His face again. He was not ashamed to cry out at first, and he was not ashamed to cry out now. But only “one of them” ! Only one of them turned back to praise! So many pray for bless ing. . . . Let your thanks come out. Turn and look in the face of Him who has healed you, and with a full heart thank H im ; and see what the attitude of con stantly received blessing is. He “ fell down on his face at his feet.” This is part of the progress o f blessing—deeper humilia tion—the will in the dust at His feet; the intellect bowed at His feet who has all intellect. Is any one reading this with blessing unthanked for? Hear the voice o f Jesus: “Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?” One out of tenl Is that the proportion now of the praising, grateful ones?—C. A. Fox. MARCH 2 Led by the Spirit “A s many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons o f God” (Rom. 8:14).
