well used” that makes the saint victorious. Blessed as the experience of His incoming is, and completely as it equips the soul, that equipment can only be maintained by daily dealings with Him . . . A Christian is what his faith is. It does not follow, because he was abiding in Christ yester day, that he is so today. We cannot accu mulate faith any more than we can accu mulate breath. If we want to go on living, we must go on breathing; and if we want to go on living to God, we must go on be lieving in Him.—E. W . M oore . MARCH 24 Still Enough to Hear God Speak “ Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit o f his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father" (Gal. 4:6). The Spirit o f God dwells within us, acts there, prays without ceasing, groans, de sires, asks for us what we know not how to ask for ourselves, urges us on, animates us, speaks to us when we are silent, sug gests to us all truth, and so unites us to Him that we become one spirit. Without the actual inspiration of the Spirit of grace, we could neither do, nor will, nor believe any good thing. W e are, then, al ways inspired, but we incessantly stifle the inspiration. God does not cease to speak, but the noise o f the creatures without, and our passion within, confuses us and pre vents our hearing. W e must silence every creature, including self, that in the deep stillness o f the soul we may perceive the ineffable voice o f the Bridegroom. We must lend an attentive ear. Ah, how rare it is to find a soul still enough to hear God speak!— F enelon . MARCH 25 Cleansed and Perfected “Let us cleanse ourselves from all filthi ness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holi ness in the fear o f God” (2 Cor. 7:1 ). The reference to cleansing is in a tense that means it is to be done by an act; but the perfecting is in a tense that points to a process; and it is very important that we should distinguish between acts and processes, between what is instantaneous and what is progressive in spiritual things. W e can never in this world become abso lutely holy; but we may and should be come entirely clean. . . . And so the ex hortation is, “ Let us cleanse ourselves” at once, instantaneously, completely, “ from all filthiness o f the flesh and spirit,” and then go on to “perfect holiness in the fear of God.” The cleansing is the foundation on which the perfecting is reared. The cleansing is an act, the perfecting is a process; and there can be no transference of these. There can be no progressive cleansing, and, likewise, there can be no instantaneous perfecting. —W . G r a h a m S croggie . MARCH 26 All of Grace "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not o f yourselves: it is the gift o f God” (Eph. 2:8 ). Grace is love confronted by sin. God’s grace has reached down to where the sin ner is in his need and guilt. And before ever the sinner accepted Christ, that grace had been busy. . . . Thus your salvation from the very outset depended upon what God did in you, as well as for you. It was an act o f will by which you chose Jesus Christ, it was the grace o f God which enabled you to do it. It was just because God was with you, helping you to
