GETTING IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT

THANKSGIVING FUN FACTS

BLACKOUT WEDNESDAY The day before Thanksgiving, commonly referred to as Blackout Wednesday, is considered to be the most popular drinking day of the year, largely because in the evening many people are back home, gathered with friends and family, waiting for the big celebration the following day. RECORD CONSUMPTION The National Turkey Federation estimates that Americans consume roughly 675 million pounds of turkey on Thanksgiving Day alone — don’t forget the leftovers for days! The average weight of a Thanksgiving turkey is 15 pounds. KEEPING PLUMBERS BUSY The day after Turkey Day is notoriously the busiest day for plumbers, and this isn’t just from clogged toilets! Be sure to keep your drains clear and avoid pouring cooking oils down your sink! THANKSGIVING FOR 3 DAYS STRAIGHT Did you know the very first Thanksgiving lasted three days? In 1621, 90 Wampanoag tribe members and 53 Pilgrims gathered and just couldn’t get enough! Could you imagine today’s feast lasting for three whole days? REAL LIVE ANIMALS The first three Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades used live animals from the Central Park Zoo. They were displayed down the

Thanksgiving revolves around family, friends, a delicious turkey dinner, mouthwatering side dishes, football, games, gratitude, and getting into the holiday spirit. On the fourth Thursday of every November, many Americans begin Thanksgiving by watching the Macy’s parade in the morning, followed by an afternoon full of cooking in preparation for one of the best dinners of the year! This year, I thought it’d be interesting to share some fun and interesting facts surrounding the holiday, its origin, traditions, and even myths. If anything, it’ll provide you with some great talking points at the Thanksgiving dinner table! BUSY AT BUTTERBALL The most popular turkey company, Butterball, has a holiday turkey hotline. During the months of November and December, Butterball team members are on standby, ready to answer all turkey-related questions and help households cook the perfect turkey. Each holiday season, the Turkey Talk Line answers roughly 100,000 questions in the United States and Canada.

streets of NYC throughout the parade, mixed in with clowns, magicians, and traditional parade balloons and floats. THE BIGGER, THE BETTER Prior to 1997, it didn’t matter how big the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons were! Some of them were so large that they caused some complications! In 1997, a Barney balloon ripped near its stomach and the Pink Panther balloon needed to be chased down by law enforcement. Lastly, a Cat in the Hat balloon hit a lamp post and broke! ORLANDO IS THE PLACE TO GO According to AAA’s findings in 2019, Orlando, Florida, is the most common place for Americans to travel to for the Thanksgiving holiday. Anaheim, California, and New York City are next on the list. This Thanksgiving, I wish each of you a happy, healthy, and safe celebration, surrounded by family, friends, and loved

ones! May your dinner be delicious and your cups filled with gratitude! Happy Thanksgiving!

ESTABLISHING LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS KEEP YOUR CLIENTS COMING BACK FOR MORE Client relationship management is an essential skill in the world of business. You can create the greatest product or service, but if you’re unable to connect with your customers, you’ll still struggle to meet your goals. That’s why developing strategies to keep your clients coming back is vital. These days, it’s not enough to simply make a sale. We want our clients to love working with us so they’ll continue to use our businesses and refer their friends. Not everyone knows how to create long-lasting relationships with their clients, though. So, we’ve gathered a couple of tips to help you impress your clients and build that relationship. SETTING EXPECTATIONS One of the biggest mistakes businesses make when talking with new clients is failing to set expectations. If you don’t set the expectations during your initial consultation, then the client will assume their own set of expectations — which may be impossible for you to reach. Setting reasonable and realistic expectations will help clients know exactly what you can do for them in the business relationship. They’ll

understand the process and what benefits they’ll reap from your product or service. This approach is honest and upfront while also nurturing the trust your client needs to continue working with you. KEEPING THEM INVOLVED If a client is interested in working with your business, you should keep them as involved as possible. During your initial meeting or consultation, explain the process as in-depth as you can and answer any questions your client may have. As you continue working with them, apprise them of any developments, new products, or information they might find helpful. Keeping them informed allows for better communication and understanding. Your client will also have an opportunity to provide feedback you can utilize to make their experience even better. Maintaining long-term relationships with your clients comes with countless benefits and will help you build your business, but you have to make the effort to foster open communication. It’s a win-win! In the state of Georgia, shoplifting is defined as performing certain actions with the intent of permanently taking merchandise or depriving the owner of possession of the merchandise or its value. This can be done through altering price tags, concealing or taking possession of store property, transferring the goods of a store from one container to another, or interchanging the labels or price tag between pieces of merchandise. SHOPLIFTING CHARGE? HERE’S HOW WE CAN HELP

Here in Georgia, shoplifting can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on certain criteria, including:

In the state of Georgia, especially in the Atlanta area, shoplifting charges are common. Retailers such as Publix, Kohl’s, Home Depot, and Walmart all initiate and pursue shoplifting charges on a regular basis. According to statistics, 1 in every 11 people are predicted to shoplift at least one item over the course of their lifetime. Surprisingly, roughly 75% of those charged with a shoplifting crime are adults. Furthermore, about 75% of those who shoplift items are said to have entered the store with the intention of stealing. When an individual is suspected of committing a shoplifting crime, they may be detained prior to exiting the store, or they may be arrested days after the incident when their identity is discovered via police investigation.

• Shoplifting property with a total combined value of $300 or less — misdemeanor, fines of up to $1,000, and up to a year in jail • Shoplifting property with a total combined value of over $300 — felony, fines at court’s discretion, and 1–10 years in jail • Shoplifting property from three separate stores within one county during a period of seven days or less with the property from each store totaling more than $100 — felony, fines at court’s discretion, and 1–10 years in jail If you or a loved one has been charged with a shoplifting crime, we can help you create a strong legal strategy, negotiate a plea bargain, and put together the best possible legal defense. LAUGH IT OFF

KIDS IN THE CAR DURING A DUI?

ENDANGERING A CHILD CHARGE EXPLAINED

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), roughly 15% of children who die in car accidents lose their lives to a drunk driver. In the state of Georgia, if any child is found in a vehicle after an individual is charged with driving under the influence, the driver potentially faces a charge for endangering a child. It’s important to note child endangerment is a completely separate crime from driving under the influence, and endangerment charges do NOT merge into DUI charges. This means child endangerment charges will not be dismissed if a defendant pleads guilty to driving under the influence. Moreover, according to Georgia’s Department of Driver’s Services, a drunk driver faces a separate endangerment charge for each child under the age of 14 they were transporting. If a person is convicted of driving under the influence while endangering a child, they may face a $1,000 fine, substantial probation, required attendance at a driving under the influence risk reduction school, community service, alcohol and drug counseling, and up to one year served in jail. Certain offenses and repeated offenses could potentially result in prison time! If you or a loved one are charged with endangering a child while driving under the influence and are facing severe consequences, you aren’t alone. A DUI attorney here at Yeargan & Kert can help to limit the potential consequences and ensure the case is resolved in the best way possible. Many defenses exist for this type of charge, including challenging the reasons for the initial traffic stop, the accuracy of the breath or blood test, or the manner in which evidence was collected.
