The Beauty Bulletin Breaking Down the Fear of the Unknown OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2022 THROUGH COMMUNICATION AND UNDERSTANDING
When we think of Halloween, we think of all things spooky and scary, right? So, what better time to talk about the “FEAR” associated with planning a cosmetic procedure? Unfounded fear is a big reason some people might steer clear of a cosmetic procedure, even if they really want it. I think there is a generic fear of the unknown. People often wonder how a procedure will play out, if it will be painful, and how much time it will take to recover. That’s why we’d like to reassure our current and prospective patients. If we go over those processes and answer questions, I find it extremely helpful for patients because this takes away some of the mystery. If we can manage what fears they may have, knowledge can truly ease a patient’s mind. When it comes to downtime, sometimes people’s expectations versus realities come into play and are quite different. But we try to correct those assumptions because we want our patients to be adequately prepared for the procedure, and we also want to minimize downtime as much as possible. It’s essential to pay attention to the processes and understand that though the internet is full of information, it can also be inaccurate. Instead, we are a better resource! With years of experience, we can help navigate and guide our patients to ensure everyone is on the same level of understanding.
side. My primary strategy is to gather information and digest it. But, at some point, you just have to take the leap! Whether it be a project you’re working on or if you’re unsure about how to proceed, just like Nike says, “Just do it!”
I find having a road map before I take the plunge
very helpful. There are people out there who don’t need that and just go for it. That’s excellent, and, for the most part, things tend to work out in the end. In fact, fear can be a suppressing event, and going for what you want can be quite liberating (even if I do like to plan ahead). If you’re like me, having a couple of outcome scenarios is a good idea. I find as I get older, I’m becoming more structured (which isn’t necessarily a good thing, so I’ve been working on being more flexible). Having those different scenarios or outcomes allows time to adjust, so I can find a little more comfort when taking that leap. Regarding fears about a procedure, I think it’s beneficial to talk with other patients so you can hear it from someone else’s perspective. It’s what we call “social proof” so potential patients can get validation from past patients about what it is they’re looking to do. We also provide before-and- after photos, and we try to find past patients who have facial similarities so that they can hopefully visualize the potential outcome of a procedure. We’re human, and we all have fears, but once we break down those fears and help our patients understand the processes, we can deliver realistic expectations and maintain the highest standards of patient care. –Dr. Sam Sukkar
There is also a financial aspect of fear about getting a procedure done, and that can be stress-inducing. Thankfully, we provide a range of options before the patient even comes in. By educating patients regarding what to expect,

AND MAINTAIN THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF PATIENT CARE.”
recovery time, and finances, we often defuse many of their concerns. We all have fears — even the staff and I worry sometimes. So, it’s important to be on the same page.
I like to educate myself about a topic as much as possible. Everybody processes information differently, and I’m definitely on the more analytical

Look Up, Look Down CAN EYE YOGA IMPROVE EYESIGHT?
In our later years, we can do a lot to keep ourselves spry and mentally fit. We can eat healthy diets, get regular wellness checkups, and incorporate movement into our daily routine, possibly in the form of yoga. But have you heard of yoga for your eyes? Yes, it’s a thing, and the former Beatles frontman Paul McCartney, now 80 years young, swears it has drastically improved his eyesight and preserved his vision. Today, McCartney is still writing, recording, and performing music, a virtue only made possible by maintaining a healthy lifestyle that promotes longevity, and for him, eye yoga plays a large role! Last year, McCartney shared his eye yoga technique with his fans and the news — he even made a YouTube video demonstrating his routine! While on a trip in India in the late 2000s, a yogi turned him on to practice. “[The yogi] explained that your eyes are muscles, whereas your ears aren’t, so you can’t exercise your ears. But your eyes, you can,” he explained to his daughter, Mary McCartney. As of two years ago, Paul McCartney still did not need eyeglasses, and admits he’s not sure he can fully attribute this blessing to his eye yoga. But because eyes are controlled by muscles, he’s going to continue to exercise and keep them healthy. And he hit the nail on the head!
While no studies or other evidence really prove that eye yoga, movements that claim to condition and strengthen your eye muscles, treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, eye yoga has been found to help relieve eye fatigue
and strain as well as improve your ability to focus your eyes. In fact, in a study involving 60 students in nursing school who practiced eye yoga for eight weeks, researchers found the students had less eye strain and fatigue. So, while you may have rolled your eyes once or twice while reading this, why not give eye yoga a try? At the very least, you’ll have a good look around!

resurfacing. Skin resurfacing has one thing in common: depth of injury correlates with results as well as downtime. Going too superficial will not give the optimal result for wrinklier pigmentary correction, and going too deep runs the risk of scarring and having a prolonged time for healing. TCA can be quite effective for pigment changes and potentially wrinkle correction. The most important ingredient is the experience of the person performing your skin resurfacing with the agent they are most comfortable using. In my case, this happens to be phenol/croton oil.”
When asked about the Phenol Peel, this was Dr. Sukkar’s response:
“In my opinion, no other peel comes close to obtaining the result of a phenol croton oil chemical peel, and I say that with experience with lasers, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and dermabrasion (all modalities) skin

Technology Improvements to Help the Environment CREATING A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Over the past year or two, many publications have challenged the idea that new technological advancements are helping us create a more sustainable future. Some of the most common examples cited are the disposal of electric vehicle batteries and the production of smartphones. How green are these technologies if they create new hazardous waste streams or increase fossil fuel use to generate electricity?
Most of today’s electric vehicles use lithium-ion batteries, which are only recycled 5% of the time, even as automakers are trying to find second lives for their batteries. In a similar vein, smartphones are rarely recycled, and their production can be incredibly harmful to the environment. Some manufacturers, including Apple, have been introducing more environmentally friendly methods to create their devices. Companies across various industries have become more environmentally conscious. While there are some outliers that reflect negatively on sustainable technological advancements, most organizations are working hard to make a positive difference. Smart technology has allowed us to improve the efficiency of certain products, such as lightbulbs and HVAC systems. We can use this technology on our devices to control lights within our
homes, set a thermostat temperature, and more. We can even set timers to control when things are turned on or off. This helps us control our carbon footprint. Through reporting functions, these companies can make adjustments and improvements to devices without ever setting foot in our homes. When used correctly, technology can play a huge role in procuring a sustainable future for everyone — by increasing productivity and efficiency while also reducing product waste and the use of harmful chemicals. Now that companies are putting a greater focus on sustainable technology, you will begin to see improvements throughout society. It might not be immediate and there may be hiccups along the way, but with continued efforts, we can have a more sustainable future.

3 OUTDOOR HALLOWEEN ATTRACTIONS GUARANTEED TO SPOOK
Get Out of the (Haunted) House WITH THESE 3 OUTDOOR HALLOWEEN ATTRACTIONS
Halloween is just around the corner. You’ll soon have trick-or-treaters approaching your door requesting a healthy share of candy. Before then, you may want to go out and feel the thrills of the season yourself, but maybe you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy the cramped spaces of haunted houses. You don’t have to step indoors to experience a spooky attraction though. There are plenty of outdoor Halloween attractions to check out, and below are three of the most thrilling. Zombie Paintball We’ve all watched a scary movie and thought we could do better than some of the characters in these extreme situations. Now is your chance to prove it. There are zombie paintball courses throughout the country, and they can be a great time for everyone involved. You’ll step aboard a bus or trailer outfitted with paintball guns and proceed along a course full of zombies and creatures. Before long, your friends and family will get into the competitive spirit to see who can hit the most targets. Haunted Corn Maze Haunted houses are great if you’re trying to experience some jump scares. But if you want to get the haunted house experience in an outdoor setting, you
should check out a haunted corn maze. You’ll hear screams coming from all around to help amp up the fear. It’s also a great way to get some exercise! Haunted Hayride So, what if you want the best of both worlds? You may want to feel scared
without walking through a maze or using a paintball gun. That’s where haunted hayrides come in. On a haunted hayride, you’ll hop aboard a platform that’s being towed by a tractor or truck as they take you through a dark forest and possibly some barns. Performers will be woven throughout to provide scares at the perfect moments. It’s a great way to get the classic Halloween experience without having to walk through a house or maze.
