A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 8

It has been an enjoyable week as the Year 8s are well and truly back into the swing of things. In Mr Isted’s assembly this week, the idea of creating ‘New Years Resolutions’ was explored. Mr Isted spoke about the importance of ‘habit stacking’ and not setting unrealistic resolutions for ourselves. I encourage you at home to engage with your children about setting appropriate, achievable goals as we try to start 2024 off with a bang. Last week we had a number of students compete in the U14 Rugby tournament where they narrowly missed out on first place. It was a fantastic afternoon of rugby, the girls were relentless and played some amazing games. Unfortunately we were defeated in the final against a tough Orleans side. Well done to all those that participated, special mentions to the Try scorers Eve, Marie & Kiera, also our top ball carrier and captain, Marie. This week students in Years 7, 8 and 9 who achieved a top 10% score in the UK Bebras Challenge back in November have been taking part in the Oxford University Computing Challenge. This is an invitation event in which students have the opportunity to develop their skills further and produce programmed solutions to computational thinking problems. Well done to everyone who participated!

Looking ahead, students are reminded to bring in a reading book for silent reading on Tuesdays as we will be dedicating a form time for students to read.

A final reminder for Year 8s about school uniform, it is important that we are wearing the appropriate school attire. If there is any confusion about what is a part of the policy, this can be viewed here, information has also been delivered to students this week.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier

Having lost their parents in WW2, Ruth, Edek and Bronia are left alone to fend for themselves in Warsaw. They then meet Jan, another orphan boy, who has a “silver sword” paper knife given to him by an escape war prisoner. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and adventure stories.
