50 YEARS CELEBRATING
50 YEARS OF EDMUNDSON ELECTRICAL PORTADOWN
ACQUIRED BY THE UK’S LARGEST ELECTRICAL WHOLESALE GROUP IN 1994, THE THRIVING BRANCH STARTED OUT TRADING UNDER THE GEC- OWNED WALSALL CONDUITS BRAND BACK IN 1975… Edmundson Electrical Portadown celebrates its 50th anniversary
Reaching a milestone 50 years of trading in 2025, a focus on quality products and service has remained a constant throughout the history of Edmundson Electrical Portadown. Navigating an evolving industry, the thriving electrical wholesaler has changed location, ownership and customer base, as well as quadrupling its team over the last 50 years. Opening under the GEC-owned Walsall Conduits brand with a team of four back in 1975, the original branch was based in the Seagoe Industrial Estate. As the thriving business grew, it then relocated in 1989 to its current site, a purpose-built facility in the Mahon Industrial Estate. In January 1994, the branch was acquired by Edmundson Electrical,
a business founded in Dublin in 1801 and now based in Cheshire with 240 locations across the UK. With the business from its creation up until his retirement in 2015, Henry Clark took over its management in 1982. “Edmundson Electrical was a great company to work for, they were like a breath of fresh air,” says Henry. “If you look after your staff, your customers and your suppliers, the business looks after itself - and another good thing about Edmundson is, they never have a bad debt.” Continuing to operate as Walsall Conduits for another decade, the Portadown branch continued to grow, expanding its team to 14 - including three full-time van drivers.
following an extensive trade counter and office refurbishment, the Portadown branch now employs a team of 16 including five full-time van drivers covering Northern Ireland five days a week. Over the last 50 years, Edmundson Electrical Portadown has also seen a significant shift in its customer base. Chris McConville, Branch Manager, says, “Up until 1993, a significant part of the business would have been white goods to the retail industry.
“Following the Edmundson Electrical takeover, this was
centralised to a Belfast distribution centre and, from then, the business has predominantly serviced electrical contractors, factories, schools, hospitals and maintenance companies.”
