‘Wholesaler’s wholesaler’ Lamp Source is marking a milestone 25 years in business with a £420,000 refurbishment of its Mallusk HQ. Aimed at positioning the family business for an expansion of its product range and customer base, the investment includes a stylish upgrade of its office space and warehouse. In 2000, Desmond Robb and his son Warren launched Lamp Source while continuing to operate a thriving electrical wholesale business. The sale of the wholesale arm in 2002 allowed them to dedicate their expertise and energy to
establishing Lamp Source as a leader in its field. The fledgling firm quickly gained a reputation for its integrity, reliability and customer service, going the extra mile to source hard-to-find lamps and components. Expanding its portfolio to include an extensive range of products from trusted manufacturers, available for next-day delivery, Lamp Source supplies lamps and lighting controls throughout Ireland and the UK. The Lamp Source story continues into its third generation, with Warren’s daughter, Ketziah Robb, joining the Customer Support team just over two years ago. Bringing fresh energy and the same dedication that has defined the family business for decades, she helps carry forward the tradition of exceptional service and customer care. While the company’s original vision was to sell specialist lamps to industrial and medical applications, it was soon superseded by a growing market for split- box distribution of non-specialist lamps to electrical wholesalers.
“Wholesalers didn’t want to buy a complete box of what we would call non-standard products from manufacturers, so we buy the box and sell them the split,” says Warren. “Electrical wholesalers have driven much of our growth and shifted our focus in ways we hadn’t initially expected.” Lamp Source’s range has expanded from less than 100 products in the early days to around 2,000 stock lines from quality manufacturers such as Avide, Crompton Lamps, LEDVANCE, Osram, Philips, Radium and Victory, with access to many more. Desmond, who celebrated his 80th birthday last year, has stepped back from the day-to-day running of the business but continues to ensure suppliers and staff are paid promptly. Warren, as Managing Director, remains closely connected with customers, personally visiting them and often answering calls himself, while focusing on what he calls ‘operational excellence’. “If you get the basics right and deliver exactly what the customer needs, when they need it, everything else follows,” says Warren. “Looking after customers builds loyalty, and we apply the same openness
