OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO WORLD TOURISM DAY IS THIS MONTH

Traveling to new areas is one of the best ways to open ourselves to new cultures and experiences. Our daily experiences in Metro-Detroit are very different from those in other parts of the country and the world. The sights, sounds, foods, and even languages can be different, and it can be eye-opening when you travel to somewhere vastly different from home. On Sept. 27, we celebrate World Tourism Day, which is the perfect time to plan a trip to a destination you’ve always wanted to visit or reflect on some of your favorite vacations from the past. My parents have always included me and my siblings in their travels, with my first trip being at the age of 1 on their trip to Alaska. I only remember what I’m told from this trip, but it was the beginning of my love for travel. Luckily, I have been back since. My first really big, quasi-international vacation was to the U.S. Virgin Islands. My aunt, uncle, and cousins rented a sailboat, which we sailed and lived on for two weeks. This really pushed me outside of my comfort zone being without my parents (I was going into fifth grade at the time), but it was an amazing, once in a lifetime trip. Now as an adult, my favorite place on the planet has to be the island of Maui in Hawaii. I love everything about the island

and can’t come up with any negatives. The weather was perfect, even though we went in the middle of summer when you’d expect it to be way too hot. Apparently, Maui enjoys the same temperature range year-round, so there’s never a bad time to visit. Additionally, you can hike to see amazing views from the top of a mountain, then on the same day walk along the sandy coast. Everything is relatively close to each other. When you step off the plane in Maui, you truly walk into an entirely different environment from the Midwest. Everyone’s attitude is more mellow, and it even smells like you’ve entered paradise. We took the Road to Hana, which was full of breathtaking sights we won’t soon forget. We also spent plenty of time on the beach. Since all beaches in Hawaii are public, it’s easy to find amazing spots. I have to give some recognition to my wife, as she planned the entire trip with contingencies in case the weather became rough. She made that trip a magical experience. Our most recent trip was to Oahu this summer, which was still special with things like Pearl Harbor and Diamondhead that you can only do there, but Maui is still my favorite. Another of my favorite spots is Marco Island in Southwest Florida. When you cross the bridge over to the island, you

enter a different world. One of the coolest experiences on Marco Island is Tigertail Beach, which has a tide pool with lots of cool shells and animals to see. We stay at a place with great service and free rentals, so we’ve taken out paddleboards, kayaks, and small sailboats to explore. Our last trip to Marco Island on spring break was actually extended because our flight (among a thousand other flights) was canceled. We couldn’t go back down to the island, so we had to find somewhere else to go in Florida until we could get a flight out. We ended up spending a few days in Venice, Florida, which was a great adventure on its own. We spent most of our time in downtown Venice and on the beach hunting shark teeth. My wife and I are both incredibly fortunate our parents took us places and piqued our interests in the rest of the world. We try to go somewhere different every year so we can experience other cultures. I’m hoping we can travel to Europe at some point because I have never been. Travel is a great way to surround yourself with a different culture and new experiences. If you’ve visited a location you think everyone should see, I would love to hear about it the next time you stop by the cleaners.

We’re Here to Help NEED YOUR SUITS DRY-CLEANED?

Have you stepped into your kitchen in the last few weeks and thought it could use more color? If so, you’re not alone. Colorfully painted kitchen cabinets are a hot trend right now in home decor, to the point that HGTV released a step-by-step guide to the painting process this winter! However, just because you want to paint your kitchen cabinets doesn’t mean you should — at least not before reading the argument for each side and getting painting tips from the pros. Want to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets? Read This Crash Course First

Suits are one of the most common things we dry-clean, but a lot of misinformation is out there about dry-cleaning suits. We used to dry-clean many garments for this one customer who has since passed away, but he never dropped

2 REASONS TO PAINT YOUR CABINETS — AND 2 REASONS NOT TO

off his suits. When asked about it, he said his tailor told him dry cleaning destroys suits, and he would be better off wearing them until they were completely worn down, then donating them. This couldn't be further from the truth. Dry cleaning is an incredibly gentle process, and most suits need to be dry-cleaned so they last as long as possible. If you were to wash many of your delicate items at home, including suits, they would shrink beyond recognition. When you bring your suits to the cleaners, we always read the care label to ensure we’re treating them in the best way possible. We will also press the suits to give them a sharp look as if you just bought them, no matter how old they are. When you bring us a suit to be dry-cleaned, we will always return it to you in pristine condition. Here’s a review to confirm what we do: “Warmest welcome, very polite, and courteous customer service I’ve received in a very long time. It was extremely refreshing. I took two tuxes to get cleaned on a Wednesday, which I thought was short notice to be picked up by Friday. They definitely delivered. Any stains that were present before are now a distant memory. The cherry on top was, as I was leaving, getting flagged down to receive a little care package. They just don’t do that anymore, and it was definitely a gesture well received, and for that, they have earned my business.”

The Pros: •

You could increase your home’s value. Painted cabinets are hot, so buyers may be willing to pay a premium for them (unless they hate your color choice). Plus, light-colored cabinets may make your kitchen seem bigger. • If you hate your cabinets, you’ll save money. Painting cabinets yourself is time-consuming, but it’s much cheaper than springing for brand-new wood. The Cons: • It’s a pain in the butt. Painting your cabinets yourself means disassembling them, making your kitchen unusable for days, and doing hours of manual labor. You can avoid some of this hassle by hiring a professional, but the price of the job will increase. • Your mistakes might haunt you. Maybe you’ll regret your color choice, maybe your paint job will be uneven, or maybe that primer spill just won’t come out of your grout. These are risks you’ll need to take if you choose to paint.

PAINTING TIPS AND TRICKS

1. Deep-clean before you paint. According to HGTV, it’s NOT a waste of effort to clean your cabinets before you sand them. In fact, it’s a vital step to remove grease that could ruin your paint job. 2. Label every panel and draw a cabinet map. Trust us — numbering all of your drawers and doors makes reassembly easy. If you don’t do this, you’ll end up crying on the kitchen floor in the middle of a cabinet puzzle. 3. Get scientific about your finishes. According to Remodelista, you should “forget matte and eggshell finishes and opt for semi-gloss, gloss, or satin instead — hardy finishes that are easy to clean.”

READY, SET, SCAVENGE! Explore What Autumn Offers

As the leaves begin to fall and the air becomes cooler, it is a sure sign that summer is slowly coming to an end. Though we will miss the pool parties and backyard barbecues, there is still lots to look forward to during fall. Autumn is known as the season of change, and getting the kids outside allows them to understand and explore the changes going on in the world around them. Creating a fall scavenger hunt is a great way for kids to practice their reading and observation skills, all while still enjoying the outdoors. SIGNS OF FALL Creating a specific scavenger hunt for signs of autumn is a great way to enhance your child’s observation skills.

Consider the following for your signs of fall hunt:

You can either download a color wheel

1. Leaves that have changed colors 2. Tree seeds or pine cones that have fallen to the ground 3. Items from a fall harvest (like pumpkins, sunflowers, or hay bales) 4. Changes among people’s apparel (such as jackets, hats, and scarves) 5. Animals hibernating or migrating FALL COLOR WHEEL The best way to explore autumn’s colors is by creating a fall color wheel hunt! Since the leaves are the surest signs of fall, kids can compare and contrast the different colors of each leaf they find, making this a fun hands-on activity.

template from the internet or make one yourself! All you need is a piece of paper that’s big enough for kids to tape the leaves onto and different areas for the colors red, yellow, orange, and brown. This will help kids see the different kinds of leaves as well as their visual changes during the season. The weather is getting colder, but it doesn’t mean you have to hibernate too! Bundle up with a cozy sweater and beanie, and encourage the family to get outside to explore all of the wonderful changes autumn has to offer.
