Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year. From the cooler weather to pumpkin patches, it is a great time to bond as a family. Sure, we’ll miss the pool parties and backyard barbecues, but there are so many fall activities to look forward to that will help create lasting memories for your kids and teach them the beauty of the changing season. I always find myself wondering what I could do to encourage my family to still enjoy the outdoors and learn more about the season of autumn. That’s why I came up with a great idea to build an autumn bucket list! There are so many activities that my family and I all enjoy, so what’s better than writing them down and marking them off as we go? Check out these great fall activities the whole family can enjoy.
Jump into a pile of leaves.
As the leaves begin to fall and the piles that are raked up begin to grow, jumping into a pile of leaves is always exciting. It might sound a bit cliche, but nothing beats the smile on your kids’ faces when they poke their heads out of the leaves. If you’re feeling a bit nostalgic, jump in with them! It’s the little things that create core memories for your family.
Head to a pumpkin patch.
Pumpkin patches have so many great family activities. The corn mazes, pumpkin picking, hay rides, and farmers markets are just a little taste of what autumn has to offer. You can even make it a challenge to see who can find the biggest pumpkin to bring home!

Explore fall colors.
Check out local harvest festivals.
Take the family on a nature walk in your backyard or for a picnic at your local park where you’re able to see the changing colors of the leaves. This is also great to gather autumn treasures — colored leaves, rocks, pinecones, acorns, etc. — for nature crafts! You can use acorns to make an acorn necklace or leaves for leaf art. If you can find some sturdy, colorful leaves, try to press and preserve them for art you can hang on the fridge.
Most farms, local schools, and communities host a fall festival in town. They typically include small amusement rides, fair games to win prizes, and all the best autumn-themed foods like apple pie, corn on the cob, and every pumpkin-tastic food imaginable.
If your town doesn’t host one, host one yourself! There’s no better way to celebrate fall than with a backyard celebration.
Go camping.
Autumn is one of the greatest times of the year to get outside and enjoy nature’s seasonal sights, whether the outing is for educational purposes or pleasure. Try any of these fun fall activities with the whole family to create unforgettable fall memories that everyone will love!
Before the weather gets too cold, pack the family up and take a trip to your local campground or even just in the backyard. You can pitch a tent, build a fort, or use your sleeping bags to experience autumn in its natural state. The whole family can play fun camping games or snuggle up under a blanket and stargaze.
Visit an apple orchard.
If there is an apple orchard near you, apple picking is always an enjoyable experience. They usually have fun activities like bobbing for apples or making cider from scratch to bring home. You can also pick apples for crafting or baking delicious pies.
IT’S UNBELIEVABLY TRUE! The Craziest Olympic Marathon of 1904
In 1904, the year of America’s first Olympics, the men’s marathon was a bizarre spectacle to behold. In fact, it was likely the most jaw-dropping event ever in the history of the Olympic Games. On that hot, sweltering summer day in St. Louis, MO, only 14 of the 32 Olympic competitors crossed the finish line on what was deemed the most difficult course anyone was ever asked to undertake. Thomas Hicks, the American who actually came in first, received the slowest time of all of the Olympic marathons since 1896. But why was this one so tough?
With temperatures of roughly 104 degrees F and 90% humidity, a rigorous 24.85-mile course with seven hills was a bit much for competitors. Not to mention, support cars were churning up dust, leaving it behind for the runners to inhale, and they only had two water stations available before the halfway mark — and none in the second half! Even seasoned runners were not up to this crazy course! Three hours and 13 minutes after the marathon began, Fred Lorz, who had ridden a third of the course in a car, crossed the finish line. He was about to be adorned with a floral wreath when he confessed he had gotten so tired that he accepted a ride from one of the cars along the way, so he was disqualified. Thomas Hicks, the true winner, was struggling with just 7 more miles to go. His fans on the sidelines provided him with a secret energy booster mix — a concoction containing strychnine (rat poison), brandy, and egg whites. By the time he crossed the finish line, he was hallucinating. And the fourth-place winner from Cuba wore dress pants and shoes for the entire race (because he lost his money gambling in New Orleans on his way to St. Louis and arrived after hitchhiking with nothing but the clothes on his back!). This 1904 Olympic marathon went down in history as the most bizarre and wildly entertaining race. Luckily, but surprisingly, nobody died!

EVA’S STAND-OFF WITH A MOUNTAIN LION This Belgian Malinois Needs a Cape
A commonly uttered phrase among dog lovers is that we don’t deserve them. This comes from the fact that dogs often give their all to protect their owners, even if that means putting their own lives at risk. Dogs seem to be instinctively wired to protect their humans — and it’s more proof they really are our best friends. In May 2022, Erin Wilson pulled off at a roadside picnic area and headed down a path toward the Trinity River in California with her Belgian Malinois, Eva. As Wilson walked down the slope, the dog ran ahead. Suddenly, Wilson turned around and realized she was being cornered by a mountain lion. These attacks are incredibly rare due to the mountain lion’s reclusive and shy nature. In fact, since 1890, California has recorded only six fatal mountain lion attacks. However, recent drought conditions have made food scarce in some areas. Their preferred prey is deer, but these conditions probably made the sudden appearance of a slender woman look like an attractive option. The mountain lion growled and took a swipe at Wilson’s left shoulder. As it lunged at her, Wilson screamed and shouted for Eva. At the distressed call of her owner, the dog came running back to Wilson’s aid. Without hesitation, Eva leapt between Wilson and tackled the wild cat. During the short tussle, the mountain lion managed to get its jaws around Eva’s head, but Wilson fought to free her dog by throwing rocks in an attempt to break its hold. When that didn’t work, she ran back to her truck and managed to wave down a passing motorist. With their combined efforts — and a crowbar and lots of
Thermometer! Take a break! pepper spray — they were able to scare the mountain lion away. Wilson carried Eva back to her truck and raced her to an animal hospital. Unfortunately, while Eva survived the initial attack, she passed away due to her injuries on June 8, 2022. Wilson said she would do anything for her dog, and that day, Eva proved she would do the same for Wilson.
Goulash , Hungary’s National Dish

Ingredients
• 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • 1 yellow onion, chopped • 2 cloves of garlic, minced • 1lb ground beef • Salt and pepper, to taste • 1 tbsp tomato paste • 1 1/4 cups beef broth • 1 15-oz can tomato sauce
• 1 15-oz can diced tomatoes • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • 1 tsp paprika • 1 1/2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked • 1 cup shredded cheese • Fresh chopped parsley, for garnish
Directions
1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add olive oil, and wait for it to heat. 2. Once heated, add onion and cook for 5 minutes, then add garlic and cook for 1 minute. 3. Next, add the ground beef to the skillet, and cook until no longer pink. Drain the grease, then add salt and pepper. 4. Stir in the tomato paste, beef broth, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes. Season with Italian seasoning and paprika. Add macaroni to the skillet. 5. Bring mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 15 minutes. Stir the pasta occasionally. 6. Mix in the cheese and remove the heat.

Thinking Outside the Bun Leads to Legal Action
The Story of 50 Cent vs. Taco Bell
In 2008, rapper 50 Cent filed an unlikely lawsuit against the fast-food chain Taco Bell. Was it an endorsement deal gone wrong? Quite the opposite. According to the rapper, the company had implied an endorsement deal in the media when there was none. Taco Bell, known for their quirky and humorous ads, had released a print ad formatted as a faux “letter” to 50 Cent, requesting that 50 Cent change his name to 79, 89, or 99 Cent as a part of their latest promotion. The letter reached the national press and even television … except for 50 Cent’s actual mailbox. In fact, 50 Cent had no idea Taco Bell used his name. By releasing the letter, 50 Cent became the face of Taco Bell’s whole campaign, too. The letter was part of a larger hip hop-themed campaign, and customers could go to the Taco Bell website and participate in a “Rap Name Creator” to discover their rap name. They also had a “Why Pay Mo’ Rhyme Generator” that played hip hop music and a montage of “hip hop-themed scenes,” according to the rapper’s lawyer, Peter D. Raymond. As soon as 50 Cent found out about the letter on the news, he wasn’t happy. On July 23, 2008, 50 Cent — whose real name is Curtis Jackson — filed a federal lawsuit saying they featured the
rapper in an ad campaign without his permission and profited directly from his celebrity status without paying him a multimillion-dollar fee. Raymond said his client sought $4 million in damages.
In response, Taco Bell Corp. spokesman Rob Poetsch issued a statement saying: “We made a good faith, charitable offer to 50 Cent to change his name to either 79, 89 or 99 Cent for one day by rapping his order at a Taco Bell, and we would have been very pleased to make the $10,000 donation to the charity of his choice.” In the end, both sides settled, keeping the terms of the settlement confidential and paying their own legal fees. So, it’s possible that 50 Cent was paid after all, but we’ll never know the exact terms of their legal agreement, except “both sides are satisfied,” according to Raymond. Since then, more companies have been careful about using celebrity names in their marketing without permission. It pays to think inside the bun, after all.
